I have to call the vet

I'm putting this off and I have to do it. I lost 4 cats in 8 months and now I am about to lose another. She turned 17 in June and has been really failing. She's been deaf for a few months and is now blind. She also has a tumor on her tummy. She was still eating and purring and finding her way around until 2 days ago. She eats very little and just lays on the coffee table but can still find the litter box and water dish. She licked a little baby food today but won't even eat cheese (she loved it). Dh said he'd take her after work all I have to do is call and it is breaking my heart! Please tell me this is the right thing to do. I still have her mom who turned 18 in March and is a little thin but otherwise very healthy. I have 2 others ages 14 and 11. The ones who died were her 2 brothers (aged 16), a 13 year old and a 17 yo. I feel like I have a geriatric home for cats.!

I'm sorry you are dealing with the loss of another cat. I had to put down 4 of my cats over a 5 year time span and THAT was hard, I can't imagine how hard this is for you! If the cat is suffering and not happy, it's time. I believe it's the right thing to do.

It is very hard. I have one in at the Vet right now in congestive heart failure. They want to run an EKG on him this morning, but if that result is as expected I will have to let him go.

I am grateful however that with our animals we have the option of letting the Doctor end their life with minimal pain and dignity. I have sat with more than one animal at the end, and they really do just seem to close their eyes and go to sleep.

Well, I made the appointment and I am sitting here crying like a baby. She goes at 7:20 this evening. Our vet has hours everyday 8am-11am and 2pm-7pm. They scheduled us for after regular hours. They are there 7 days a week. Oh, this is so hard.

I'm glad to see someone who's moving ahead to make the loving and humane decision for the animal they love. I went through this in April with my 16 year old poodle. I wouldn't face the truth about her condition and selfishness in wanting to keep her as long as possible caused her to linger longer than necessary. Don't do that. Believe me, you'll regret it! You can never undo suffering!!!

You are doing the right thing, even though it is hard and everything inside you says it's not right. I had to do this with "Skitz" (a 19 year old cat) in Jan. this year. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to let go, but in the end it really is the most loving thing to do.

I'm am soooo unbelievably sorry! Your post made me soooo sad! I love my kitties so much and I can't imagine not having them. My Father has a cat that will be 20 on August 29. I watched her be born in my basement! She's been a wonderful cat but she's in kidney failure and he's deaf and partially blind. So sad. He's hoping she just curls up on the couch and goes to sleep forever. I hope your cat has a peaceful exit too! I can truly sympathize, but i haven't lost as many as you have recently.

Yes, it is VERY difficult, but when their quality of life starts to suffer like that, it IS time. I once tried to put it off a "little while longer" with one of my very favorite pets, and over the weekend, it became clear that HE was not going to put it "off a little longer". I ended up having to watch him die without the aide of painfree drugs. I have kicked myself for years over that. This is the best thing for the kitty.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I was having serious second thoughts because she ate a tiny bit and was purring while I was petting her but I would only not do this for me and I do think her quality of life is zilch so DH just pulled away and all 3 DS's and I said our goodbyes to her. She was born under DS # 2's bed (he's 23) and DS#3 (age 13) has known her all of his life. I am so sad right now and have a huge lump in my throat. Any way, thanks for listening.
