I inherited some money unexpectedly from my Grandmother last week. We just returned from WDW or else some of it would definitely be earmarked for a trip!! Most of the $ will go into my childrens' college accounts, however, I would like to take a little and splurge on some scrapbook supplies. My most obvious thought is a Sizzix and some dies. I don't do real high-tech scrapbooking. I've never contemplated a Xyron (not even sure what it does!). I've got most of the basics. Loads of paper, stickers, circle cutter from CM, paper cutters (large and small), scissors, markers, digital camera, printer, etc.

My only concern about a Sizzix is the dies..... once you use them for a particular page, what do you do with them.... especially the more "specific" ones (baby ones and the like). I can see where the alphabet ones would be useful, and maybe a few more basic shapes (leaves, people, flowers), but I'm sure some would be used only once. Too bad there wasn't a "library" for this kind of thing! I don't have a group of "scrapping" friends and I have never been to a "crop". It's just little me, all on my own, except for my Disboard friends! So anyhow, sharing the dies with friends isn't really a possibility (unless I make some new friends soon!).......Anyhow, I would appreciate any input into how I should spend this $$.......Thanks.................P

pjlla -

That is an interesting dilemma. I've looked at those before also and have had much the same reaction - would I reallly use it that much.

Of course, I've not been in the same position of having money to spend like that. New stuff is coming out all the time...maybe set it aside until you see something you really want?

pjlla, I live in your area so maybe I could be your friend to scrapbook with. What town do you live in?

I would definately treat yourself to the Sizzix there are so many dies that you would use over and over, tags, stars, leaves, sun, and the alphabets. I say go for it.

Personally, I'd spend my money elsewhere... like in tons of bazzill CS, but that's just me.

I have a Sizzix and rarely use it. Yeah, the alphabets are nice to have, but I find that I perfer the endless fonts you can find on the internet anyway. Plus, do you really want the same alphabet in all your albums?

If you really want one, go for it... I just don't think it was a wise choice for me.

Sorry to hear about your loss-
happy to hear about your ability to shop ;)

Do you do swaps?

I use my sizzix a lot to participate in swaps - I LOVE the frame , tags, and have a few other s that I use a lot - besides the alphabet -
I have 2 alphas now and am picking up the 3rd next week - and I know someone mentioned 'the same alpha through a whole book' thing - I LOVE being able to coordinate my letters to my paper -
and if you look on www.DIYnetwork.com you will see a zillion other uses for a sizzix to include cutting Fabric, sponges, make your own stamps
But I would never live without my ZYRON - you have to AT LEAST get the little x ($7 at Walmart) to run the letters through and make them stickers ;)

That said maybe one of these days we should do a SIZZIX/Quick-kutz Swap on the Disboards!

I love mine. But of course I'm not the best person to ask. I got mine because I like it, I rarely look at it in a pratical view. If its something that will make you happy, make life a little easier or just give you pleasure I say get it. I never buy them unless I have a coupon or they are on sale. I don't mind having the letters repeat in my albums. I do so many different types of albums, to me its no different than stickers ( and I can choose my own color ). The dies are great if you are careful which ones you use they can be used over and over again , and look different each time. Depending on what you do to them. And they are a must have if you participate in swaps. I like the fact that its at home for me to use when I'm ready, and I can pick the color I need at the time. Whatever you get , have fun spending.

I personally love my Sizzix. I have 2 Alpha sets, one is Sizzlets so they are smaller.

I have bought dies I could see myself using again
(dog bone and Dish - I have this thing about those spotted Disney Movie Stars Also a friewnd who loves Pluto.
The Tags are forever in use even my mother called me to make her some tags.
I have flim strip Die since one of my fav. hotels is AsMo.
My friend/Dh bought me heart dies.

I bought cute lil frog and and fish dies.

I buy with coupons for most of them.

First of all sorry to hear of your loss!

Now Sizzix...I may not be the best person to ask, but I have every alphabet that they have produced so far and quite a few of the dies(I can't let a coupon go to waste!) I never paid full price for any of these, so I consider it an investment and a bargain!

I say go for it but use a coupon!

I got mine for Christmas and I don't know how I ever lived with out it. They same goes for my neices and nephews!! I have helped with 3 school book reports with my sizzix so far! They love cutting out the letters for the covers. I'm using it for the birthday swap and my DS valentine party. If you use a coupon or wait till the dies are 50% it is so worth it. I love the ivy and I'm working on a Weding album with that now.

I'm sorry about your Grandmother.
I got a Sizzix for Christmas and promptly bought an alphabet, 4 different sized circles in one die, frame, and tags. I love it! I plan to by a sizzlits alphabet next.
I have heard you can run paper through the Xyron and then through your Sizzix so that the letters or die cut are stickers. That way you don't have to figure out how to get glue on those little sizzlets and stuff. I haven't tried it yet though.
You could think of your Grandmother every time you used it too. :D

I agree with the majority here. I love my sizzix! I have only one alpha but would like more. I also use the tags endlessly and I bought the stars and hearts. Things I thought I would use a lot. Never thought I would buy anything other than the alphas, but DD and I use them all.
