I realized tonight as my kids were making a batch of cookies to put out for santa that we are all out of carrots! they like to put out cookies for santa and carrots for the reindeer ( i don't even know if reindeer really eat carrots!)..........
so do you put something out for the reindeer? do they eat lettuce?? LOL
I am trying to avoid leaving the house til after the holiday, the roads, traffic and stores are CRAZY around here and the last thing I want to do is go out for carrots tomorrow!

Yes - lettuce will work nicely - as will celery.. No need to panic..:goodvibes

put out reindeer food!

Supplies

Raw Oatmeal
Glitter (I use a silver or gold base and mix red and green in with it)
Plastic lunch baggies
Ribbon
Paper or cardstock How To Make It

  1. Pour about 1/8 cup of oatmeal in baggie. Add some glitter. Close baggie.
  2. Attach with ribbon to the front of the baggie the following message. "On Christmas Eve, sprinkle this wonderful Reindeer Food on your lawn. The shiny glitter will sparkle in the moonlight and the smell of oats will guide Rudolph to your home."

Or this one

Printable Gift TagIn a small zipper food storage bag or empty shaker container, mix:
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup red or green sugar crystals (as used for cake decorating)

Add this poem or print multiple copies of the Magic Reindeer Food Gift Tag:
Be sure to take this magic food and sprinkle on the lawn,
On Christmas, Santa's reindeer travel miles before the dawn.
The smell of oats and glitter path will guide them on their way
And you'll wake up to Santa's gifts next morn on Christmas Day!

[Note: many recipes for Magic Reindeer Food call for craft glitter, which can harm birds or wildlife if ingested. For safety, substitute colored sugar crystals and be kind to animals!]

whew! I can relax.......LOL
they will get some nice romaine lettuce......cookies, and

binny thanks for the reindeer food instructions, that is so cool, I am going to do that with the kids tomorrow, then tomorrow night we can take it out and sprinkle it! great idea!

Yes... we do the whole oatmeal glitter thing too.. Well we use to.. but DS is 18 now and would notice the glitter still on the ground :headache:

So hope you have a windy Christmas Eve ;)

We used to use Cheerios as reindeer food. The squirrels or birds would gather all the Cheerios at night so they'd be gone on Christmas morning. :)

Thats a great idea.

Carrots make the reindeer fart in Santa's face all night anyway!

OT- Santa is lactose intolerant. He gets corona and lime at our house

Santa came early for us. He was here last night because we are trav. today. I didn'thave carrots either. We put out oatmeal. It was all gone this morning so they must have liked it.

The reindeer eat oatmeal with colored sugar crystals. We don't do glitter anymore (though prettier) b/c I've read its bad for animals who eat it.

we are using bird sead for reindeer food last year we did the oatmeal and it was still all out there in the morning the kids were upset they didnt eat their treat... bird seed will go away fast here

When I was growing up, Santa AND the reindeer liked pretzels and beer.

Yes, I am sure I am the only kid in the world that left pretzels and beer for Santa.

FWIW, when I was younger my dad worked for a beer distributor.
