unsubscribing from junk email! Now I'm giving it the 48 hours that some of them say it takes to unsubscribe. What are the chances that when I wake up from now on I'll only have a few emails....slim and none?

It's possible that you may get more e-mail. Some sites take your "unsubscribing" as confirmation that someone is there and is at least looking at the e-mail so they keep on sending and maybe add you to other lists. When AOL put in their report Spam feature I used the "send report and delete from mailing" option. My e-mail increased. I later read an article saying this was happening to people for the reason I gave above. There's just no answer to stopping the spam. :(

Slim and none????? Naaaaaa - you'll probably get double or triple what you were getting!!!!!

I was gonna say the same thing... it won't do anything other then let them know that it is a working email address so now they will send MORE stuff. Our IT department let us in on that little bit of info. Sorry!!!

Ditto Pam and Kim -- you've probably just verified your address as an active e-mail account, Beauty.

Beauty, are you there or are you kicking yourself. ;) ;) I know that's what I felt like doing when I found out this Internet "secret". ;) No good deed goes unpunished or something like that. ;)

Just reaffirming what everyone else said. By replying to "unsubscribe," you are merely verifying for them that it's a valid e-mail address. Prepare for the onslaught that will probably follow.

Usually I just delete the messages without reading them -- but I was getting so sick of how many were coming in daily that I decided to take the time to use the "remove" feature.... some didn't even come up valid, but most did..... HOWEVER, I did find that within 48 hours I had double the amount of spam that I got daily before :( .

Guess I'll just go back to deleting.

MSN was HORRIBLE about junk email, but I get maybe 2 a month with Bellsouth.

I never unsubscribe or open unrecognized e-mails. I believe it only confirms that you have a valid e-mail address and you will, as a result, get more e-mails.

I built a filter to filter some of the more graphic e-mails. Words like "Viagra, prescription" and various others that I can't mention on DIS catch a lot of the garbage. The explicit e-mails infuriate me.
