Here's something you guys might want to talk about on the show. Disney Channel is sponsoring a contest that only kids of school age (or a parent of one) can enter. The grand prize trip is to Walt Disney World from May 21st - May 25th. In other words, when school is in session for most of the country. So, Disney is telling kids to SKIP SCHOOL to go to WDW.

Contest link is: http://parks.disney.com/super-summer-sweeps Maybe some lucky homeschooling family or family whose kids aren't in school for that week can take advantage of it.

Do you think no kids have ever missed school to go to Disney?? The parks would be empty for like half the year!

If older dd weren't in high school with advanced/honors classes I would encourage dds to enter.

If missed school because of family trips. I turned out fine.
It depends on the kid, really.

I missed school for WDW trips, too. I think there is a difference between a family choosing to take their kids out of school for Disney and Disney promoting a contest to school aged children in which they HAVE to miss school in order to claim the prize. It's not like this contest is open to parents of younger children who don't attend school or families with no kids in school. It is only open to families with at least one child between the ages of 8 and 18.

When I read this at first, I just thought how unfair it was that you had to have school age kids.
Those with grown kids, or no kids,, sorry, this isnt for you!

I dreamed and dreamed a few years ago about winning a spot on a podcast cruise that was sailing during the school year (I'm a teacher).

I had my explanation all ready to go for my admin in the event I won.

It's the end of the school year at this point a lot of high school aged students have taken finals already, and in Elementary/Middle it's really an issue in any way for school aged kid to miss three days of school at the end of the school year....

A lot of standardized testing is being given in some districts during the later part of May...not that I am touching that hornets nest...

It does seem kind of odd they put it there. It means my family is out

There will be other contests. I have noticed that they run some type of contest every quarter, maybe the next one will be right up your alley :)

Maybe their hope is that the winner won't be able to go? That will save them some cash....

Just to play devil's advocate, some mid-western schools end the school year just before the Memorial weekend.
We don't have THAT here in NY, but before we lost the time to snow days, we originally had the Friday and Tuesday around that weekend off for a five day break. Maybe there are some schools that have the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day off.
Regardless, thank you for mentioning the contest. I entered for my kids and while I don't normally pull them out of school for vacations, it's been a rough end to 2014 and beginning of 2015. I'll make an exception if they win.

I actually entered a few times before I realized that the prize was for specific dates. (Totally my fault for not reading the rules!) In our school district, funding is based on butts in seats. So every time a kid is absent, a deduction is made for funding. This includes excused absences like sick days which seems completely wrong, but that's just the way it is.

It's only open to US residents - makes it unfair to us Canadians, eh?

Nothing works for everyone. If it's not a time you can go, don't enter. Lots of people are fine with pulling kids out or are already done school by that point.
