I have a question for those with High School students

Does anyone have any information about the "Who's Who" program? While I was a good student in high school and college, I was never "chosen" or "nominated" for the Who's Who in American High School publication. I did know there was at least one student in my high school class that was included in the publication (although I didn't know her well), but I know nothing about the program.

Is this a true academic honor or simply a pay to get named deal? Our son was "nominated" and the literature simply indicates the need to complete the biographical data form and return it. We need not purchase a book (although we would if he's listed, obviously) to have him included and there is no cost associated with the listing. We have no idea who nominated him or what criteria was used to select him, if any. I've done a brief search about the publication, but it's primarily PR junk.

I guess we just want to understand the nature of this company/publication and whether or not it is actually respected. I feel rather inadequate not knowing more about it, but as I said, I haven't really known anyone in college or high school who was listed. Our kid is just a freshman and we've really got to get on top of all this stuff--I didn't think we would be bombarded with scholarship and college stuff this early on. Any insights folks?

From my experience it is a slight honor. You don't have to pay to be in the book, but you do have to pay to receive a book of your own.

I was in it and now my teenage daughter is in it. :) I never bought the book though.

My kids have been nominated and I just threw the stuff away. You could check with the guidance counselor at your school. I always thought it was a scam.

You will be bombarded, just wait. After DD took the PSAT sophomore year, the college stuff really starting coming. She is an excellent student and finishing her junior year but no one has offered us any college money.

We just went through this the counselor Said it's more of a scam to get you to buy the book.

when i was in high school, my entire honors english class got the letters. believe me, some of the people in tat class didn't have the greatest grades.

i think it's a scam.

I agree with the above posters. It is a really small entry in a huge textbook type of thing. Our DS is graduating HS next week, and you won't believe the amount of college stuff that he got in the mail during Sophomore, Junior and early Senior year - until he commited to one college. Then I guess the schools find out and quit sending it. Most of the "supposed" honor stuff is really a scam. Your child's school will notify you of the legitimate honors.
