I have an itch to scratch... Scratching it would require me to purchase my 3rd contract (currently at 280 points...)

On the negative side, got a kid going into college and another that needs a car.
Also, I don't have the vacation time at work to use my points fully right now.

On the positive side, I would prefer to use 1BR's (I have gotten spoiled. I don't like studios as much anymore) and in the future, I really want to be able to do some time in the cabins and 3BR's and invite more family along but I don't have those kind of points.

Talk me in / out....

Annnnddddd. GO!

I’m not one to talk you out since I am at 775. My kids took out loans for college for whatever was left after we gave them a certain amount...which we know help them pay since we have the extra!

But, we did not buy in until 2009 When our youngest was 13 and our oldest was 21.

Right now, with the borrowing limit, people may be interested in transfers which may help with all areas. I know I will do that when I want extra. It’s a big itch that is so easy to scratch!

The practical advice is: what can you afford, and what do you plan on doing travel-wise later on down the road? If you are on track for your financial plans, and for paying for college and kid's car (if that's what you want to do), then I'd say buy now especially if there's a resale contract that matches your UY and desires. Otherwise, wait a few years till college is passed and you have the vacation time to use.

I am admittedly not the one to ask, because we scratched the itch and bought in... and then I kept on scratching. I really need some DVC-hydrocortisone, lol!

We have 350 points, not sure I’m gonna help, but we own 250 at SSR and bought a 100 point contract at OKW to bank and borrow to get a GV in the fall for larger friends and family trips. The new borrowing rules, hopefully will be gone hopefully in a year or two. At the rate we use points, we need another 150 or so.

I mean to be clear, even with the car and the college, if it's something that I really, really want to get, I CAN. I do have money that I could use for the purpose. I won't have to get a loan, I can pay cash for it. It would probably be resale - which would be different for me since my other 2 are direct. But the money is not really the deciding factor.

The difficult part is that I do not have a lot of vacation time at work (2 weeks + 5 sick days). I have trouble using the points I have now - at least if I do studios. I have never rented my points out to anyone - I prefer not to and just use them.

So it's more a matter of do I need them and will I actually use them, or will I just end up with a bunch of extra points I need to shed every year.

But.... I WANT MORE POINTS!!!!

So the internal struggle is more of a need to buy points (even more so with the rates right now) and not being sure I would be able to use them if I had them.

Originally, I was going to buy into Reflections.

I am currently at 432 and own at OKW, BRV, BWV, AKV and RR. I like the mix of resorts so I can usually find something in any given season. I recommend you get something at another resort than you own now and keep the same use year of course.

MFs will be due soon so if wanting to buy on resale market, I would wait just a little longer & see if the "itch" is still there and you might get an even better deal. I would say don't make an emotional purchase but we just bought resale (SSR) in April & direct (Riviera) yesterday so let's just say I didn't follow that advice but I'm glad I did at the prices we were able to get but then again I think DVC is an emotional purchase as long as you don't have to take a loan out for it. :-)

If you aren't going to be able to use the points, then they don't do you any good. If you are dreaming of big group trips you aren't ready to take yet, don't buy the points right now. It hasn't come to pass yet that the deals on the resale market are too good to pass up. And, with that limited amount of vacation time, make sure you want to spend it at Disney. My kids are adults now, and without airfare for four, suddenly we've been able to take trips much farther afield (Africa, Europe, etc.) - obviously not right now with Covid.....as much as I love Disney, the safari ride is a poor shadow of a safari and the UK pavillion is not really at all like being in the UK and the freedom to travel without having to take the expense and needs of the kids into account has been remarkably freeing.

Resale is picked dry at the moment. How about you buy a loaded up contract once grandbabies are on the horizon? And weddings are paid for...

Family you invite usually don't appreciate the offer in the long run. It's just your timeshare and you won't lose anything if they decide not to go at the last moment. Let them pay for their own stay. Wait until that last kid is out of college and you aren't paying for cars any more. Then if you still need the extra points consider it then. 280 points can go a long way, even when you book a one bedroom. As long as you don't need the GFV or RIV one bedroom. OKW one bedrooms are really nice.

Ok, I am game I am going to talk you into it and out of it in one try.

If you can afford it buy it! If you can't afford it don't buy it!

Hope I helped :rotfl2:

If you can afford it buy it! If you can't afford let the kids fend for themselves and buy it! ;)

Realistically, like others have said, you will have to do some calculations and see if your budget can afford it. One option is since you dont have time to use all of them now, you could buy and then rent them all out, which will help with dues and lower your buy in cost a bit and not forcing you to have to use them now. Then when you can and want to use them, dont rent and use them for yourself.
