Both my DH and myself lived, worked, and played in Central Florida for 10 years before we had to "reluctantly" move back North for family reasons. Needless to say all of our friends are in Florida. HOWEVER, Our family life up here is so jammed with other people (we are primary caregivers to 86 year old grandmother and severly disabled father in law, as well as anchor to mother in law that lost husband to cancer and siblings that are not grown yet). Full time jobs and a multitude of other things. Needless to say when we take a vacation it is to escape "everyone else" (our theme song is "We're not gonna take them" adapted from Twisted Sisters "We're not gonna Take It".) we don't tell any one that we know in Florida that we are coming down. :sad2: I always feel guilty for not saying anything, but realize if we told one, then they would all know and then our time would be spent dividing our time with everyone else (just like at home, just different people) when we really want to enjoy our little family of 5 with no interuptions. If we vacationed anywhere else this would never be an issue, but WDW is our most favorite place in the world... what do you think? Are we big "poopy heads" (as our daughter would say) or are we justified?

:listen:

I don't think you're a poopy head. I have relatives in Spring Hill and St. Augustine. I never mix a disney vacation with a visit to them.

I don't think you are either. Sometimes you just need family time and that's that.

Vacations are vacations and you can (and should) choose to spend them however you wish..

My goodness! You certainly deserve it!! What you're doing for others is beyond admirable - it's astounding!!

Have your much deserved vacation and enjoy! :)

Just remind yourself that your family needs that time to recuperate and rejuvenate and your children need some time alone with their parents and siblings! Don't feel guilty - you are not a poopy head! :sunny:

Considering the everyday stress you must have, I can't imagine anyone giving you a "poopy head" rating. You need the time to take care of yourselves every bit as much as you take care of your extended family. Go. Enjoy. Leave the cell phones on vibrate and let the calls go to voicemail...

Thanks so much to all of the replies... last summer I was struck so hard emotionally when my DS11 was just as excited about not having to share us as he was to go to WDW! I have thought about taking a separate trip to "visit" but then it always turns into a Disney trip and finding time to go "again" is laughable!!

Thanks again!! I needed the encouragement!! :goodvibes

No, I don't think you are a poopy head. I do visit my family when we go to Orlando (they are only an hour away) but that is because I would never see most of them otherwise. Also, before my son was in school, we could spend several weks with them so it wasn't like one rushed vacation but two seperate ones.

Visiting friends and relatives do not belong in the same sentence as vacation, unless...you are planning the vacation with them.:thumbsup2

Been there, done that, got over the guilt.

I lived 5 hours from family and friends. Before I had kids, it wasn't a big deal if we didn't see someone on a trip. Then, after the kids, 80 people expected us to give them undivided time in the space of two days on Long Island.

We did two trips where no one but who we went to see knew we were coming-life was A LOT easier.

Enjoy your time without telling!

Suzanne

Maybe at some point you will choose to make a trip down there to visit your friends or have a combo trip. I'm sure it would be fun for you to see your friends, but right now you are doing what you need to do--spend time with your immediate family! You are pulled so many different ways most of the year and you deserve your vacations just as you want them!. Nope, no poopy rating from me. :teeth:

Go and enjoy! I sort of have the same situation DH and I being the only siblings that are now empty nesters do the most for both sets of aged parents. We have a couple older relatives that live in FL that we do not tell when we go on vacation. Sometimes you need to get away from taking care of others and take care of your own family.

You know it kills me that the "kids" are the reason everyone feels compelled to want to spend every waking moment with us! Its nice to know this isn't just happening to us!
