I hate Puppies!!!

Hang in there and get a system that works. It can be overwhelming.

Oh wanted to add TREATS in there. The only reason your puppy should be getting a treat is if you are training them. Keep them very limited and tiny. That can mess up potty training.

I have an aggressive dog that bites. That is the worst thing, trust me.:sad2:

He was messed up when we got him and he is better but he hates children and bit my nephew.

I have one of those too, but she hasn't bit anyone. Not because she wouldn't, but because we're so vigilant with her. I never want to own another aggressive dog again in my life! I just want a happy dog who's lazy and affectionate and who will lick everyone who comes in the door.

Oh as for allergies, I was a little allergic when I got my puppy but either I got used to it or when their coat changes it went away.

Yes...we knew the one rescue was messed up but we took him anyway. He is a good dog but is one of those dogs that is just not "right", you know.:guilty:

Right now we have to take them on the leash to potty. That was fun to train...not. Rain, snow and cold I am out there with them.

OP how old is the puppy? I forgot to ask. That may have something to do with picking up on the potty training.

Never keep a dog cooped up in the garage all day. Garages are extremely dangerous with all the chemicals and material that are in them.

Besides, dogs are pack animals - they need to be with their packs or families. If one is just going to shove the dog in the garage and the backyard, then they should rethink why they are getting a dog.

They have an empty garage(they keep all the junk in the shed) and the door is OPEN-Bernese are dogs that love to be outside. And yes he gets tons of love with all the kids outside*(including her own kids) He sleeps inside the house but during the day he'd rather be outside.

Even tho puppies are a lot of work (just like having a baby in the house), I love the puppy stage! Soo much cuteness! I too was thinking that maybe the pup has a bladder infection. Usually they don't want to potty in their crate. I also agree with no free roaming until 100% trustworthy. Is the pup getting enough exercise? A sleepy pup is a well behaved pup ;) Walking them does wonders. Also you may want to try a small laser pointer (available at Petco or Petsmart) and see if the pup likes to chase it :) Good luck!

Do they keep the cars in the shed too?

Antifreeze is highly toxic to dogs and it is very sweet to the taste, so dogs will lick it up if it has dripped on the floor.

Do the neighbors wash their car tires before they enter the garage during the winter? All the residual chemicals that are used on the roads during storms are also toxic and at the very minimum do damage to the dog's pads.

Garages are a very unsafe place to be for dogs.

I echo the need to crate the puppy and when we were training our latest arrival, we used Dog Wraps (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+32+14457&pcatid=14457)
for the in-between time, when he was learning that peeing is only done outside, but he still hadn't mastered giving us clear signals. Or when he got too excited playing and just urinated as he ran around with our other dogs in the family room.

One day, he tore off the band and howled to go outside and never needed them again. It was kind of like a kid saying he was done with diapers and was a big boy now.

Cars are not in the garage but thanks for your concern. Again your vision of a garage is not the only type of garage but I agree that the standard used as a garage garage is not the place for a dog. In fact I have called the aspca on a neighbor that was leaving her akita in the garage all summer long after they got in trouble for tying her to a tree outside all day- with no water.

Thanks all for the tips. Today it got a little bit better. I did make his crate smaller, so hopefully that will help. He just looks so uncomfortable, but if it helps than he will have to get used to it. It is a massive crate for dogs up to 110lbs. We have the divider but perhaps I was giving him too much room.

I also tried having him following me even after he pottied outside. I think he senses my fear of him pottying on the floor?? Who knows.

I do agree that Bernese dogs love the outside. He would much rather be out there, however we wanted an inside dog and I am afraid of what he will get into. The fence will keep him in but that will have to wait.

I have an Australian Shepherd that LOOKS like a Bernese. She is 72 lbs so she is large for her breed. Everyone that saw her as a puppy was convinced I didn't know what kind of dog I had. At any rate it took what seemed like forever to get her to stop peeing in the house! She got the pooing down pretty quick though! Puppies ARE ALOT of work! SHe spent much of her "free" time tethered to me or to my mom. At the time we thought she would never catch on. Our biggest issue now is submissive peeing. She freaks out around men she doesn't know. On a normal day though she will go to the door and "talk" when she needs out. (Although sometimes I think she hears a cat outside and wants to go protect HER yard.lol)
Just be patient it will get better!

Look at this way. When you train that dog to be perfect you will have it made with the kids.

Has a vet checked for an infection? If not, I would do that soon, just to see as another poster mentioned. While potty training is difficult, it should be coming along. Hang in there and good luck with the puppy!
