Close friends of ours had to go out of town for the night last night and asked DH and I if we could spend the night at their house and take care of their 2 children, ages 2 1/2 and 5 months.
I found out that DH would be out of town for work so it was just going to be me. (slight panic setting in)
I immediately say to DH "I can't do this by myself!!!" Are you kidding me? I'll have to put them to bed, get up in the middle of the night with the baby, get them up, feed them, get them off to daycare and take care of their dog! I'm lucky I can get myself up and running in the morning.
OK - so I know I "can" do this, no one's going to die, but it's so overwhelming. It's like being thrown right into the deep end. No easing into things and learning as a Mom which way the baby likes to be held or the fact that your 2 year old freaks out when you have a towel wrapped around your head in the morning.
I think the biggest thing is I don't know their routine. Who gets what to eat, who gets up first, etc.
Well, I'm happy to say that everyone survived. I just dropped them off at daycare.
My only issues were a screaming 2 1/2 year old when his mommy and daddy left, and I mean screaming!
Then a 4 month old who got up twice in the middle of the night.
A naked 2 1/2 year old who didn't want to get dressed and go to daycare, he instead wanted to "play with new playdough from grandma, ok?"
Instead of my usual breakfast of toast and a glass of milk on my way to work I had a granola bar and Sesame Street fruit snacks.
Hats off to all you Mommys!!
I know I'll get the hang of it when I have my own kids, but this was a bit of a shock to my system.
Did I mention I could use a nap?
LOL!!
Happy Friday!
