I had an epiphany in drama today.

Hey everyone.

It's my first day of school at my new school. I was fine until drama, when I was reading a script and realized that a real teen would never say things like this, so I asked the teacher if i could tweak the script the slightest bit, I got this: "No, Drama is controlled. It is not improv comedy". Then it hit me. I didn't want to be in drama. I wanted to be in comedy. Weird huh? And on my first day too. Have any of you ever had something like this happen?

mmm, i take drama too and what your teacher said isnt entirely true... most actors actually dont stick 100% to their scripts lol... any form of acting and entertainment has an element of improv

It's usually fine to tweak your script, just not after you've been doing it for a real long time.
If you brought it up like as soon as your class began doing the script, it'd probably be fine. But after a while, people learn their cues, and they use those keywords to know that their lines are coming up soon.

I alter my scripts ALOT in drama. Like. I cut lines & change certain words sometimes.
But if you're talking about tweaking your dramatic piece so that it's comedic, I can understand your teacher saying no.

If you're in a high school drama class you should get to do drama AND comedy, they are usually seperate units.

I personally like dramatic scenes better, it's ALOT easier to make someone cry than it is to make them laugh.

just don't edit shakespere... lol

I totally agree with that I am in drama for the first time this year and I love it! it's just that my teacher won't let us do anything really depressing or morbid or something but it's what we're all good at! So I don't really get it but the only way he would let us do anything really dramatic or depressing was if we only did like 1 or 2 depressing scenes in a *caberet which is what we are doing now

*a caberet, if anyone doesn't know, is like a combination of a bunch of different scenes from movies or plays all together in one story line. just so you know

I never tooken drama so i dont have any comments here as ive never been even in a play since we dont have drama at my school...

Wow I couldn't disagree more with your teacher. It's all about your emotions and it's not just about the lines, it's controlled in a sense as you do follow a storyline...but it's not RIDGID (if that makes any sense?)
I used to take drama...and we where given scripts and stuff...but we could modify them, which is fine.
Obviously if the line is "Let's go out to lunch" you can't change it to "I have a plane to catch" but there are certain things you can do. Creative license..
Same thing with music and in my case...singing.

we dont do drama in school, but I have been doing it outside school since I was four, and my monologues/dualogues never get out there without at least minor tweaking.
If the tweaking doesn't cut out vital information or change the mood of a scene entirely, than I wouldn't do it-
however in your case tweaking it to make it more realistic seems reasonable enough.
