Not only did we have a black and white tv, but we only had 7 channels. We didn't have a computer. There was no Internet and we actually had to go the library and use the card catalog to find books for research.

And, to top it off, there was no such thing as Epcot, MGM or the Animal Kingdom. I don't even think the Magic Kingdom was built until after I started elementary school.

The horror ... !!!

Ahahaha!!!! I remember whe I was younger we only had a few channels. Actually our television had buttons on it similar to those you find on old elevators, the ones you touch ever so lightly and they light up, it provided much entertainment! I am a total computer geek but something was actually kinda nice about not having a computer back then, not watching as much t.v. We played a tone! We used our imaginations.
I can't say I was totally deprived in terms of Walt Disney World :p

LOL!

Yeah, I guess some kids would think I had a deprived childhood too.

For starters, my parents raised 9 kids in this house:

There was no air conditioner in the house, yet I never remember being really uncomfortable. I still don't care for air conditoner. There was no dishwasher, unless you count me and my siblings.

We had ONE TV, with 4 channels, I believe.

We ate what was on the table, if we didn't like what was on the table, we didn't eat.

We didn't have a lot of toys, but we had loads of fun doing things outside, or creative things like putting on plays.

A deprived childhood? Perhaps in some people's eyes. I loved my childhood, and wouldn't trade it for anything. :)

I'm with snoopy:D
I think the kids today are deprived........of getting to use their imaginations......of having free time.....of having time to be a child:D
I remember spending lazy summer days reading book after book ( I could even walk to the library by myself) and playing in the dirt with toy trucks, spending hours just having a blast running around under a sprinkler and laying in the yard seeing great things in the shapes of the clouds. Not to mention the joys of being able to wander the neighborhood freely!

And don't forget that when you wanted to change channels on the tv, you had to get up off your butt and walk over to the tv to do it!

And tv stations went off the air by midnight, right after they played the Star Spangled Banner!

And no microwaves! TV dinners were cooked in the oven and took as long as cooking a regular meal. Popcorn was cooked on top of the stove (still tastes the best that way!).

I still don't own a microwave. I hate those things. My kids would so love it if their Mother would concede to modern day appliances, but I just don't see the point in owning a microwave or a dishwasher.

Count me in! When we drove to Disney we had no tv in the car. It was terrible, we actually had to behave and couldn't stop every two hours to stretch our legs either. And GASP, we stayed at the days inn.

You had seven whole channels, Donna? I was one of the lucky children in our neighborhood. I can't remember not having a television, very few of my friends had a tv. My husband's family didn't get their own tv until he was 12. Black and white, of course.

We never had more than 3 channels until the late 50's I think, when UofH started the pbs station, then we had 4.

I was 24 years old before Wilgus and I got a color television. 1973, I remember it very well :)

When I was little we use to visit my great-aunt on her farm and had to use the outhouse.

We had a remote for the TV with 4 channels......It was me. Dad had me programed to change channels like nobody's business. I loved my deprived childhood, would not change it for anything.

Well, when I was a kid I was REALLY deprived, cuz WDW didn't even exist! I did go to the NEW DisneyLand when I was a teenager though!:p

BTW, I returned to DL for the first time since I was 14 just 3 years ago. It really had not changed all that much. I even found my way around just fine!

Oh, for crying out loud, Snoops, buy a damn microwave!!!! Good grief, woman, live on the wild side! :teeth:

LOL Laura! You sound like Luke!

But why do I NEED a microwave? This is what I don't get. I sure don't want to COOK anything in there (yuk, that SMELL is enough to make me GAG! Someone is cooking a nasty TV dinner in there right now at work and I feel sooooo nauseous!) As for reheating, I can do that just as easily on the stove. And besides, I have a tiny kitchen (and a tiny house!), I need all the counterspace I can get. DH wanted to get one of those under the cabinet kind, but I vetoed that. I figured we've all lived long enough without a microwave, we can keep on living without one. :teeth:

(of course, I'm not nearly so frugal about some things.....shoes being one of them! :p )

when I was a kid we had 2 tvs. One for picture and one for sound. We loved it when someone came over and didn't know the reason why we had 2 tvs next to each other. We would have one show on for picture and one for sound and sit back and tried very hard not to laugh. Sometimes to would take a long time before people figured it out! LOL

I too was the family remote control (as was my DB). We had one of the big console-type TVs with the rotary dial for changing channels. And I remember the day we replaced the rabbit ears with a roof-top antenna with a motor and a rotary dial on top of the TV to adjust it.

I was JUST telling someone about this - my uncle had one, and we used to think he was rich, since our rabbit ears had the tin foil on them. :p ;)

No color TV, no remote, had my slingy, matchbox cars and my imagination, use to build lots of models and we would all sit around and play board games and the whole family would paly games too. Now it's all get me, take me, make me and buy me.
Then PONG came out!
