Wow I am pretty impressed. I was lucky I got into the school -- it was their first year so their standards were a little lower to get more kids in the school. Now it's pretty hard to get in.

Anyone else go to a "public elite"?

No, but I am sure that if there had been one in Virginia Beach when I was in HS I would have easliy tested into it.

My niece and nephew's school is #48. It was #89 or #90 last year.

Yes, mine was an elite HS. We had to test to get in. I wish they had something similar in MD for my kids. Oh well.

I just checked the top 100 list and the school my DD13 will be attending next year is #74.

That list surprised me because Bergen County Academies is on it..and when I was in school, it was called Bergen Tech..and pretty much only kids who didn't want to go on to college went there--to learn a trade. I know a few people who went and they're doing very well, but they weren't college bound at all.
Must have changed since then!
Glad to hear it though, because my children could do there if they wanted to.

my husband's high school (Hunter High, NY) is automatically excluded from the list. It says May 8, 2006 issue - NEWSWEEK excluded these high performers from the list of Best High Schools because so many of their students score well above average on the SAT and ACT. Now my high school is also excluded but probably for opposite reasons.

My local high school (which is also the high school I attended as a kid) is number #148 - I guess that's pretty good! Not that I turned out real well by going there!!

My high school was excluded, but not because it was a public elite, rather because it was private.

Mine weighed in at 38...it was top 10 last year I think, but it has been 11 years since I went there now, but we did have 13 national merit scholar finalists at that time (not me mind you) so I guess we did pretty good. What is interesting is that my school is an inner city type of school that can be very rough at times, but they placed the IB kids (me included) down there to get the test scores up.

DH went to #97: Chagrin Falls HS. DFIL still teaches there. Holds steady as it was #98 last year

I'd be interested to see the private school listings. Anyone know where to find them? Or if they even do them?

I wish I could have gone to a school like that. My high school didn't make their top 1,000 - and it's not automatically excluded, either.

Well I went to private schools but I'm familiar with several schools on the list. Many suprised me as when I went to HS they didn't have stellar reputations. Same with some of the local HS here on the list. Out of the 4 in the top 600 there are 2 that I wouldn't send my DS to.

The school my kids went to is ranked 114 and I wouldn't give you two cents for it. My oldest son was placed in AP although he didn't belong there and when questioned the counselor said it helps their numbers and she could have cared less about him. My daughter and youngest son both had learning disabilities and I had to fight every day to get them the education they deserved. I finally ended up pulling my youngest son, sent him to private school, and he did great. I also filed a law suit against the county every year to cover it and won every year. The philosophy of this school was and is we have too many kids that perform on a high level that those that do not are left behind without regard. Beware of these lists, they can be misleading.

My high school (Little Rock Central) is ranked 20th. I think it was even higher a million years ago when I was there.

A lot of my friends graduated from college in three years as we had such a strong high school program that it was pretty easy to get advanced placement credit in college.

I went to Newcomb/Tulane and Stanford with people from some of the best private high schools in the country. I never felt that they had any better education than I did.
