The health plan I work for is sponsoring "body composition analysis" at the benefits fairs I am doing for state employees this month. I had them test mine because the fairs last a month and I want to see how much fat I can lose in a month. Well I have plenty to lose! I'm at 35.4% which means my body is officially more than 1/3 fat! I'm in the high category. I'd like to drop to moderate, but that's 28% and I'm not sure how long it will take me to get there, but if I see it go down, I'll be happy!

edit:5/2/03- Today was the last health fair where we were sponsoring body fat testing so I had them retest and I am now down to 29.2%

Won't it be interesting to see how much body fat you are able to lose in a month?

I've never had my body composition officially figured out. Using the table in the Atkins book, though, I figure I'm at 36% or more.

*sigh* I'm working on it, I'm working on it.

NativeTx, is there a place online to look at that chart? I am quite sure my number is awful :( but I would still like to use it as a motivational tool, if possible. I can track it monthly like my measurements!

I was wrong, my BMI is between 33 and 34. Not a huge improvement I fear :(

Geetey, try THIS

:eek::eek: AACCCKKK!!!! :eek::eek:
Okay, I think I was better off NOT knowing my BMI number! I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short for my weight. I am not sure if I want to save that link or not, NativeTxn! :(

While pilates is stretching and making all of those muscles leaner and longer, does anyone know if I can help make you taller? Just a tad?? ;)

Can you tell me what they did to come up with the number? I have always wanted to do thi, and am being nosey.

Glo, this is what I found when searching body mass index. It is from WebMd.com. I don't know if answers your question though. :)
BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by his or her height (in meters, squared). BMI can also be calculated by multiplying weight (in pounds) by 705, then dividing by height (in inches) twice.

Okay, I followed the method of finding BMI- but when I saw 1800 I about freaked! Then I realized that after mulitplying your weight by 705 you divide two separate times your height- I had doubled my height then divided- very frightening- but right now I'm still at 34 which is still not good- but the only way is DOWN! YEAH! And everytime I lose weight- I say a little departing farewell to that number on the scale- So long sucka!! :)
Thanks for the info on how to do it correctly!
Tara

geetey- I think the only thing that will help you in the getting taller catagory is a streching rack- but I hear those are painful! What I would give to have a body fat number of 34!!!!! Mine should be so low! BUT, I'm working on it!
Imhall2000- I like the idea of saying so long- I think I'll do that too!

How brave of you to get your BF% tested! You know what? It IS going to go down in a month!!! :) And it will keep going down after that. And now you have another goal and you will be feeling so incredibly proud of yourself when you reach your ideal BF%.

I have no idea what mine is, but I know it's not as low as I'd like it to be! :) I still have a somewhat Santa-ish belly. :)

Ok, I just used the BF% calculator at self.com and it says I'm about 29.4%. I'd like to lower it to 20%. :) Got alot of work ahead of me, I see!

You're working on moving in the right direction Annie! Keep your head held high -- you're doing a terrific job!
:D

You are doing great, Annie!! Keep up the great work!

I don't even want to know what my BF is at!!

Thanks everyone. Your support means a lot to me.

For those who were wondering:
It was down with a device called Futurex. The paper they gave me says "By briefly bouncing a near-infrared light off your arm, the Futurex-5000 allows screeners to administer a body composition analysis in less than one minute. Fat absorbs certain wavelengths of light; the more fat you have, the less light is reflected back."

They also asked questions like age/weight/height/how often do you workout?

They entered my answers into the device and then put the device on my arm and it gave them the reading.

I can't wait to see what it says next month!

I had my body fat % completed on Tuesday. I made it to 20%. It was the test where they pinch and measure 3 areas of your body....luckily not the abs area;) . I also did the electronic body fat %, which sounds like what you did, right after this and it said I was at 26%, the pinching one is suppose to be more accurate. I know that I went down 10% within 2 months, which was great. The rating scale that the fitness center uses is strick and I am considered average....I want to make it to the good range.

Ackkkkk! I checked my numbers at that site. Scary, yet encouraging.

According to them, I was at 32 when I started W.I.S.H., at 28 now.

Good for you, Kathy. I remember from a health site I visited that "the 30's" are where we are at increased risk from all sorts of nasties like breast cancer and diabetes. Lowering your BMI improves your health step-by-step. I look forward to leaving "the 30's" behind for good!

Annie that is an amazing difference!!!!!!!! You must be so excited! It seems like just yesterday that you posted the original message. You are melting away so fast! :) Woo-hoo!!! Keep up the great work (and put the cherry popcorn down!) ;)

I know Karen I was amazed.

When I mentioned how shocked I was to our health promotions people (I expected 1 or 2 percent loss not 6) they told me that most people don't realize that if they want to get the fat off their bodies all you have to do is UP the INTENSITY of your aerobic workouts. It should be a little uncomfortable or else it won't work as well. You see much quicker results when you push yourself a little harder and that's what I did!

The cherry popcorn is now in a place where I need a stool to get to it, and will remain there until I feel like I can control myself again. I guess I put the popcorn in a "timeout" kinda..... :)
