I called Directv to see if they';d offer loyal customers any discounts since dish network keeps sending us info. After about 10 minutes and 3 representatives, they gave us $20 off a month and 6 months free movie channels. Never hurts to call and ask!

I had DH call them a week ago to see if anything can be done to lower our bill. They did the same thing for us! I was so happy! :)
Good for you!!!:thumbsup2

You know, my bill says I am getting $25 discount per month and free HD. I still feel like I am paying too much! But, I guess we do have a discount.

wow, that's awesome! all they gave me when i called 3 months ago was $5 off. now the discount has expired and it's time to call again.

Good for you...I had been with Direct about 10 years and got tired of seeing all the wonderful things new subscribers were offered...we signed up back before the days of DVR so called Direct to see if we could get some sort of deal since we were long time good paying customers, etc. N O P E !!..ok..so we cancelled, got a nice deal at Dish with 2 DVRs for less money and they just gave us free Starz for a year. Now, of course, we are constantly getting "we want you back' deals from Direct...silly...

That's how it was with us and Dish. We had 7 year old receivers, a dish that couldn't pick up half the programing we were paying for, no local channels and we watched NY channels for "over air" channels, and DVRs were fairly abundant. Dish wanted us to pay $500+ for a DVR, $99 for the 2nd receiver, and $75 for a new dish to pick up everything we paid a service for. I argued for a long time about it. After hanging up, I called Direct TV and ordered a DVR and 2nd receiver. As soon as it was installed, I called Dish to cancel and they were bending over backwards to get me to stay. Too late, they should have thought of it when I called the first time and before having Direct installed.

It may be time to pull it on Direct now since we are paying twice the amount for a simple DVR and 2nd receiver than new people are with 2 DVRs, 2 extra rooms, and free HD.

Anyone know if you can do the HD if you don't have an HD television? Can you still connect them up to an old tube tv? I don't have the money to spend on an expensive TV right now, but would like to get the HD for life before that would possibly disappear.

Channels are broadcast in HD. However, if your TV doesn't have HD, you will not be able to view it in HD. If you want over the air TV, you will need a converter box to pick up anything at all.

I don't know why you would need to pay $500 for a DVR. We got two DVRs from Costco for $199 each. They are HD.

Interesting. I called a few months ago and they wouldn't offer me anything off our regular service. My husband called to cancel the NBA package and they gave him a discount on it to keep it. Some discount is better than nothing!

We have Directv, and I've been thinking about doing the same thing. They wouldn't give me a discount either.

Have you been as well satisfied with Dish as you were with Directv? I've heard several complaints about Dish so I'm a little skittish.

Someone on this board posted that DTV doesn't offer fantastic deals until you actually shut them off.

So, I am waiting for our contract to run out and then in May, when we are going to Disney for a week anyway, I will call to cancel. :goodvibes

But we truly are considering going to OTA TV anyway, so this wouldn't just be an idol threat if they can't come up with cheaper TV.

That's an idea! During the summer we don't watch a lot of TV anyway. That would be a great time. :thumbsup2

Dish is fine! It has gone off air a couple times, but Direct did also occasionally. It does revert to a screen saver kind of thing sometimes, which I don't get, but all you do is hit select and it comes back on..like if it 'thinks' you aren't watching, it reverts to a Dish screen...no biggie though. Overall it is just fine..we have 3 recievers and 2 DVRS which we had resisited getting for years and now just love. Our bill is a bit less than Direct's was and has more 'stuff'
