I fell down the stairs on the cruise last week.

Talk about embarrassing! I don't even know what the heck happened. I was walking down the stairs, I got to the fourth step to the bottom and my ankle just twisted out from under me, the next thing I know, the floor was coming up to greet me. Thankfully, I saved my face from hitting the floor, but it was a good fall. A little girl was coming up from the deck below, and she saw me fall. Her mom came up and around after I was picking myself up. The little girl yells at the top of her lungs " I SAW THAT LADY FALL!" Embarrassing.

I think what happened was the extremely rough seas. The boat jerked a little too hard to one side, and I tumbled. My sister asked if I had been holding onto the banister. I am only 50 years old, thankyouverymuch. Believe me, after that, I was holding on.

I’m glad you didn’t break your wrist or ankle. I recently treated a lady who broke her forearm after falling on her second day of a week long cruise. She didn’t get to enjoy her cruise much.

Now that I’m thinking of it, I don’t recall if DCL has signs reminding people to hold onto the rails. I know they are on at least the Radiance class on RCCL, and they were on the fathom Adonia (which has returned to being a P&O ship).

Might be a good addition to the ships.

Saw a lady fall in the gym on the Magic. It was during their spa drawing the first day. She walked into the gym to close to one of the excise machines and her foot caught it and down she went.

Glad your pride was the only thing that got hurt. I try to use the stairs as much as possible anywhere and I find that I tend to carpet tumble on the stairs on Disney ships a lot. Now my middle name is not Grace if you know what I mean but the carpet on the stairs on the ships seems especially "sticky" to me (if that makes sense). I try to always hold on to the rails (I'm 51 so there's that) on the ships just because of that.

Yes, holding onto the rails at any age is a good idea. Just remember to wash or alcohol your hands at your final deck because the rails are major germ spreaders.

At least these are people you'll never see again. I once fell flat on my face in the cafeteria at work. Embarrassing!

Glad you were okay. And glad you didn't fall on the little girl. Anyone can have an accident, or even a twist of an ankle.

Oh no, I am soo sorry! I hope it didn't bother you the rest of the trip! How was the rest of your cruise? Been thinking about you guys, hoping it was as enjoyable as possible (minus the fall of course)!!

I fell on the Wonder in the club during bingo pre sales. Stepped right off the little stage and the boat seemed to roll and my feet went right out from under me and I landed on my butt. It was a PACKED house and I was 20 weeks pregnant so OMG how everyone screamed. It was seriously one of the mos embarrassing moments and even though I jumped right up and was fine they made the nurse come up from the medical center and 2 officers came in and talked to me. The whole rest of the night and next day I kept hearing random people say “that’s the pregnant lady that fell” everywhere I went.

So take heart it can always be much much more embarrassing!

We walk the stairs and try to get staterooms forward and up so that we are as far as possible from most food. Have to walk off those great meals. In our 70's and always hold onto hand rails...stairs are tricky anyway with trifocals. if you do fall, don't do it in the atrium on the grand staircase. It will be the only time you get more attention than the mice and princesses.

Are you ok?

I'm sure the little girl was not making fun of you or anything--kids just have no filter and she probably was worried for you. I know how you feel though; I had just gotten a glass of wine at Preludes and was walking down the steps in the upper balcony to my seat at the Walt Disney Theater for the show, when the same thing happened to me -- my foot just twisted right off the edge of the step below me and I fell flat on my face. The wine went everywhere too. People jumped up and asked if I was okay and I was pretty mortified and worried they all assumed I was terribly drunk since I was holding a drink. I didn't even think about needing to hold the rails on a moving ship, but that makes total sense now!

I think it is quite easy for people to forget they are on board a vehicle going 25+ mph. And your eyes receive no cues because everything seems stationary to your perceptions, so it's quite easy for the floor to be in a slightly different place than your brain thinks it will be. Not such a big deal usually on flat surfaces, but becomes more of an issue on stairs.

It's actually recommended that everyone hold onto the rails when on ship stairs

On any stairs, actually. Slips, trips, and falls are the most common cause of injuries in offices and homes and other places - not just due to stairs but they are the most common reason. Worse on a ship when you can never know exactly when there is unexpected movement in all directions (something we thankfully don't have to worry about in offices or homes). I'd be surprised if you run into someone who hasn't had an expected trip, stumble, misstep or fall on a cruise ship especially on the stairs.

I even hold onto the railing in my own house when going up or down stairs unless it's unavoidable because of carrying something. Of course, I have 3 cats who either love me so much they can't be parted from me or they're hoping to be named in my will and would like to inherit earlier.
