I fell again today

I posted a few weeks ago that I was having some arthritic problems that included weakened ankles and instability. My right ankle is by far the worst and I favor it, even on level ground.

Today, I was walking rapidly through my house (on level carpet) and my left ankle not only gave out but completely buckled. It happened so fast that I didn't have time to react other than to instinctively extend my left wrist to break my fall. Oh the pain! I went down without warning and with quite an impact. Scary!

After sobbing (alone) on the floor, I said a prayer of gratitude that I was not carrying my DGD. (I usually carry her on my left side; the side that took the brunt of my fall. I could have killed her! She and I were the only ones home at the time.) Then I crawled to a phone and called a neighbor. to help me get up and to help with DGD. Another call to my mother to pick up my DD at school (still on 1/2 days), and then to visit my DH in his ER.

I have a very bad sprain (the kind that is almost worse than a break) and our podiatrist friend has me in a flexible cast. He was more concerned about my intact/right ankle. It seems that it has absolutely no stability or strength. So....... I will have to be very, very careful until my bum ankle recovers. He may be able to do surgery to tighten up my tendons/ligaments/whatever but that is much later.

Geesh! Just what I need with a newborn in the house! I am nervous to carry her so I am going to use the stroller in the house when I need to move her.

I am gonna be so sore in the morning! I also sprained my left wrist. Between my morning arthritis and my new injuries, I will be walking like an elderly Grandma! I really gonna look the part, now!

At least I was not in public. The police would have done a breathalyzer for sure!

glad your ok, we ought to send you with c.ann over to Iraq, disasters folllow you two around ;)

Oh Claudia! It's not as if you don't have enough to think about, now this. I'm sorry and you make sure you are careful so you can heal faster. {{{hugs}}}

Sorry to hear that again, Claudia. I will help you walk when you are here in Chicago. :)

LOL, Jason.:p

Claudia, I'm glad you're ok and you weren't holding your DGD. I bet it scared the daylights out of you though! I hope the sprain feels better soon. {{hugs}}

Ouch! I know you must've been hurting (and probably still are!)

Hope you're doing much better today......take good care of yourself!

So sorry to hear about your fall Claudia.

{{HUGS}} and hope your ankle is better soon.

It sounds so painful. {{{hugs}}}

After you are healed from this injury, I wonder if there are shoes you can wear that would give your ankles some support.

You have to do something, Claudia. You can't have this happening again and again.

Oh my! I'm praying that somehow you'll be better soon and you won't have to worry about this any more.

Your comment about praising God while still on the floor was very uplifting. It's amazing how you can always see the positive when faced with difficult trials. :)

This sounds similar to what happened to my mother, who also has arthritis. Are you sure it's caused by weak ankles? That's what she thought-she'd be walking along and without warning her ankle would give out. When it happened in front of her class (she's a teacher) she went to a doctor and found out, much to her surprise, that the cause was in her foot. She had cortisone shots (painful, but effective for her-at least so far). So be sure it's your ankles! Her ankle hasn't given out since.

Sorry to hear about your fall Claudia! I hope it heals up quickly and you are pain free soon.

Pixie dust and prayers for your healing. {{{{HUGS}}}}

Sorry to hear about your fall Claudia..........have you tried Physical Therapy to strengthen the ligaments in your ankles? I completely tore my ACL ligament in my knee, and thought the only thing to do was surgery, but went to PT for about 6 weeks and learned a lot of exercises, (which I still do....but not as much as I should) that can strengnthen your ligaments and avoid surgery, (of course, if that is what your Dr recommends). I managed to avoid surgery, and am usually pain free, unless I do something that really strains it (like A LOT of hiking or bike riding) and rarely feel like my knee will "give out". And I'm not that young,either.....:D
