But I have to do it. St. Jude's is a WONDERFUL place. A GOD send to people living with the hell of childhood cancer. I donate everytime they ask. My brother died of cancer, and he was 48, I can't imagine losing a child to cancer.

That being said, right now, many company's/stores are in a fundraising campaign for St. Jude's. Domino's Pizza is one of them. We are supposed to ask the customer when they call, iif they would like to donate a $1 to St. Jude's. Most of the kids that work there, won't ask. they are uncomfortable. So, I figured I really needed to pick up their slack, and make it a point to ask, and not forget. I was so proud of myself by the end of Firday's lunch shift. I got 8 donations! Not much , but it is more than what we have gotten since it started almost 2 weeks ago. Because they don't ask.

Anyway, even though I became Asst. Manager, I still deliver on Friday nights. In between runs, I will answer the phone. So, this past Friday, I kept the momentum, and asked if they would like to donate to St. Jude's. Well, after delivering to a few people, it dawned on me, they say yes, but give the driver the same money they would of given anyway. So, the $1 they said yes to, is coming out of the driver's tip. It took it happening to me 2 times for me to realize this.

So, I have decided, I am only going to ask the customer's who are coming in for a carry-out. I feel really bad, that I am closing off a good portion of potential donations, but it is not really a donation from the customer. If 20 delivery customer's said yes to $1, then the driver's combined made a $20 donation, not the customer. I don't feel I can do that to the driver's. :guilty:

Maybe the drivers should ask for the donation AFTER the entire transaction (including tip) is completed. For instance,

"Sir, your total is $15.98"

"Here's $20, keep the change"

"Thank you, sir. Would you also like to make a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, we are accepting contributions this season."

Or you could say when a customer calls, "We're also accepting donations for St. Jude's, if you'd like to make a donation through your delivery driver."

If the company is doing this, shouldn't the $1 be added to the total? So, you'd tell the customer that their total is $16.98 not $15.98?

While St. Jude's is a wonderful charity that does unbelievable things for children, I don't think it's a pizza place's (or any other company's) business to solicit for them.

That's what I was thinking. You shouldn't expect the people to remember to add it to their own tab. If I donated in that way, I would expect it to be added to my bill.

The company I work for is also soliciting donations until December 4th. We are asking for a $1. We don't deliver so I would have never thought about the possiblity of the donation affecting a tip. What about Chuck S' idea about adding it to the total?

I agree that maybe we shouldn't have to solicit for them, but they need us to and I am glad to help. Every $1 adds up to quite a large total at the end of the day and is doing a world of good.

I think that unless you can find a way to add it to their tab (and they may think you are already doing that) then you have no other choice then to ask only carry-out orders only. It isn't fair to the drivers to take it from their tips.

That said, I think that this should be run by the owner or manager before proceeding as there could be projections of the donations your store will bring in.

The $1 is added to their total. So, a customer who orders the 555 deal, their total with tax and delivery, comes to $16.85. Yes, they want to add $1 to St Jude. New total $17.65. They give the driver a $20.00 bill, and tell him to keep the change. ( I am using this, because this is the standard.) Before St. Jude donation, driver would of gotten a $3.15 tip...after donation...$2.15 tip. See? Since we can't tell a customer what to tip a driver, it is not like I can say, oh and please add an extra dollar to what you were planning on giving for a tip.

This is what I was thinking too.

Oh I see. That is a sticky situation. Is there a way to look at the tips from before this drive to see how they are being affected? I think that if this is the case then you don't know for sure that they would be getting $3.15 instead of $2.15.

I don't envy your position.
