We've never stayed on-site...this year will be our first time...and we're looking forward to it. 
That said, we've rented a house in Kissimmee in the past, and absolutely loved it. Large living space, we cooked if/when we wanted--great for breakfast before the parks...and we had an screened in pool all to ourselves when we wanted.
I don't know if we missed any Disney Magic...sure didn't feel like it. We had a great time...and like someone else said...it was nice to be away from the parks sometimes...but close enough to go back when we wanted.
And, the time you can spend with your mom and dad...and if your mom likes to cook. Take advantage of it.
Whatever you decide, have a great time!
