I Feel Horrible!

So, after 8 years of love, I am getting rid of my dogs, and I am CRUSHED!!!

We have 2 dogs, a Basenji and a Pug Shiz-tsu mix. I got the pug for my wife for our first Christmas together. He is cuddly and adorable, but has a history of biting. He was fine as long as you didn't hit him in the face, or grab his feet. Not too tough to remeber. The Basenji is a great dog, but she gets bored very easily. And when she gets bored, she finds thing to do... like eat toys, and clothes and basically anything else she can find.

Now everything was great with our little family, but then we had 2 daughters. The dogs did not like this. The Basenji started showing her displeasure by leaving lovely little presants in the girls rooms. The pug was a bit bigger problem. He wanted nothing to do with the girls. For the past 3 years, it hasn't been too bad. THe dogs would avoid the girls, and the girls would leave them alone. But recently, our 3 year old has become more interested in the dogs. We made sure to talk to her about how to be gentle with the dogs and everything was going well, until the other night when he bit her. It was just a bite on the hand, and it barely broke the skin, but it was a bite none the less.

It was at that point I made a difficult choice, to get rid of the dogs. I listed them on Craigslist and began the re-homing process. It has been tough, but I found a loving home for them. I visited the house and family first alone, and then with the dogs, and tonight I dropped them off for good.

I just needed someplace to get this off my chest.

I'm so sorry for you. You did the right thing though, both for your girls and the dogs. They do become part of the family. But you did your homework and found them a good home. They will be ok. Hope you feel better soon

You absolutely did the right thing. That could not have been an easy decision, but it was made out of love (for both your family and the dogs).

I think you did the right thing. Some animals just can't adjust to children. In this case it was the right decision! I am so sorry.

You were lucky to find a home so fast....what is the craiglist? Be careful cause alot of people take in pets that seem to be great and than turn around and sell them for $50.00 each to animal research....it is a huge racket and they find all the time that poeple post to be wonderfull and talk about how they will love your pets and than well....did these people take both dogs without a blink of an eye even knowing that one bits?

I am not telling you this to briing you down but can tell you love your pets and want the best for them.....but it sounds suspisious to me!!!!

Also they say never ever give your pets away that you should sell thaem for at least $100 each cause this detered the bad people from getting them cause they want free pets not ones they have to spend $$$$ on...

to all if you ever advertise in the paper be sure you add a lot for your pet....jsut to be safe....sorry if this scares you ....you may want to double check over the next few months....

and as far as what you had to do it was a sad decision but I also agree it was thre right one....you could also try the Dog whispere if it happens again. next dog buy a lab they are great with kids...but be for warned they will chew till about 1 year....

We had to do a similiar thing 2 years ago! Our twins were 18 months old and our DD had been diagnosed with asthma. At that time, we weren't 100% sure what was causing it. Plus, we were going through major remodeling, working all the time, and the kids just were getting into things with the dog too much. She was a German Shepard/Doberman mix, but really, a great, gentle dog. It was more for her benefit too. She needed someone who could give her the attention she deserved. We'd had her for 7 years by then, she was about 8, so we took her back to the no-kill shelter we adopted her from and they were able to find a woman who was semi-retired. The woman called a week later to tell them how much she loved her!! Made us so happy that we made a good decision...

Sorry I rambled into my own story. But I just wanted you to know that you did the right thing too! It was tough, but you'll still have all those wonderful memories and the dogs will be loved for still!
