Yesterday my husband found out that his triglycerides are at an ungodly level (ALMOST 700!). His doctor told him he is a walking time bomb for stroke or heart attack. The doctor wanted to put him on medication, but told my husband he could have 2 weeks to TOTALLY change his eating habits and recommended the Atkins diet. My husband is not at all overweight, he just cannot process carbs for some reason. I am a little overweight and I have committed to do this with him. The problem is this.......we leave Friday for 10 days at WDW! WHAT DO WE EAT??????????

I am going today to get a copy of the diet book. I really don't know a lot about the Atkins diet other than it is low carb. Please help us. I love my hunny very much and could NOT live without him.

If your husband will just eliminate refined carbohydrates from his diet, his triglycerides should drop drastically and quickly.

Refined carbohydrates include: white flour, sugar, corn starch etc.

My husbands triglycerides dropped 98 points in three weeks after starting Atkins. They are completely normal now.

Good luck with this. The book will explain this better than I can.

There are a lot of Atkins friendly choices at WDW. Like Kath said-stay away from those refined carbs. I had a great time at 'Ohana- lots of meat- just skip the pineapple with caramel for dessert.

{{ Hugs }} to you - you must be so scared!!

You and your DH can do this. Just skip refined and starchy carbs, like breads, pasta, rice, and potatoes. Eat meats and healthy veggies. It can be done at WDW - many of us have eaten low-carb there. It is easier to eat low-carb at a sit-down restaurant but if you're grabbing stuff on the run, then try salads with chicken on them or get a burger or chicken sandwich without the bun. Turkey legs are a good snack, if you like them.

Please keep us posted on his progress! I'm sending prayers and pixie dust for you both.

I agree, this can be done! I was at Disney in August and although I had one "messup":p I still stayed on Atkins the entire time! O'hana was great, especially all that meat! Most places at Disney will accomodate any diet that you ask them about, be sure to ask your server! :)

Good luck and please let us know how your trip goes! We are all here to support you on this! :)

Thank you everybody! I am hoping that this will be easier than we had originally thought. We went to the healthfood store yesterday and bought a box of low carb macaroni ($5.50 a box!) for a pasta salad at noon today. They had a low carb bread for $7.00 a loaf, but we found another low carb bread at Wal-Mart SuperStore. We also bought a box of Atkins cereal. For breakfast we had the Atkins cereal with some frozen blueberries (no sugar added of course!). Ed was still hungry so I scrambled him an egg (no butter, oil, or milk---just egg) and let him have 1/2 piece of low carb bread. He was satisfied after that. He really liked the cereal, he just wanted more of it than he was allowed to have.

We really appreciate the prayers and the pixie dust. Thank you so much!

But on Atkins you need to use butter on that egg. I know it sounds weird but it's true. Next time cook him that egg in butter and put butter on that 1/2 slice of Atkins bread. He will really be satisfied, then ;)

LOL he will be glad to hear that. I have been reading a little this morning, apparently he shouldn't have had the berries yet either (in a couple of weeks maybe). We are just muddling through right now until I get this all straight in my head.

That must have been really scary for you. If you haven't gotten the book yet, please go to www.atkins.com and do some reading there. Two weeks is not a lot of time, but if you really want to make a big impact quickly, stay away from the special low carb foods. Those are meant to be added in slowly in the later phases of Atkins.

For the best results, stick to whole unprocessed foods. Fish, fowl, shellfish, meat, eggs, limited cheeses, and 2 - 3 cups per day of salads, or veggies. Try to eat whole meats instead of processed lunch meats. Don't be afraid of fats. Your body needs them. Olive oil and butter are both allowed. Margarine is not.

Every restaurant I have been to has been very accommodating. If your entree comes with potatoes or another starchy veggie, ask to substitute a salad instead. Ask the server to not bring bread to your table.

It is difficult to make a big change like this, but if you follow the atkins plan and get your body into ketosis, the food cravings and hunger goes away very quickly making it much easier.

Good luck to you both! :)

Good luck to your hubby! :)

I do want to throw out a caution...IMHO, he's relying way too much on replacement foods, particularly at the very beginning of Atkins (Induction) when the only things eaten should be meat, eggs, cheese, and very low carb vegetables. Later on, it's ok to add the occasional low-carb bread or pasta. It's so much easier to get used to doing without than it is to get a taste of what's missing.
