Mission Space, the new AK ride, and the rumored changing of Spaceship Earth = THRILL RIDES...

One of the reasons that I love WDW so much is its lack of roller coasters, and other, similar rides.

There is nothing for me to ride in Universal Studios, Bush Gardens or any 6 flags.

I like my rides, slow, safe, and educational...

Are they trying to atract people from other parks?

The first time we visited WDW I was impressed how the majority of rides were for the whole family. It was not like most amusement parks, which have a separate kiddie land for the little ones. Now there are a few more rides some members of my family avoid, but as the kids grow up, they like most of them still. We spent one day at IOA last year, and my 12 year old liked that better than Disney. Of couse, she had been to Disney 3 times, and IOA only once, but she wants to go back. We are going to spend more time at Universal next trip. I would guess it is because of other parks with more thrill rides that disney is adding some. A lot of us do like the thrill rides too.

I have to agree, if they keep putting in thrill rides, eventually WDW will be just another amusement park, and I'm not sure I would travel across the country and pay inflated prices for room for something I could ride 2 hours away.

I think Disney is just reacting to some of the competitive forces in its market. They are making efforts to keep people from spending that one day at IOA to get their thrill ride kicks.

WDW has rides for everyone, and the are trying to appeal to all tastes. If they don't keep abreast of the thrill rides, they will alienate a whole group of people who can easily spend their money at Busch Gardens or Universal. To stay competitive, they must appeal to all audiences... thrill seekers as well as those who appreciate the traditional Disney type attractions. Updates are inevitable.

I hope that you will continue to enjoy the wonderful attractions and shows that Disney has to offer. Disney will always be a family destination, so the attractions that are so cherished, such as the Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan, Splash Mountain, and the like will continue on, but there is always room for new and innovative ideas and technology, and I applaude the Disney Corporation for seeing that and growing with the times.

I like the idea of disney adding some more "thrill" type rides/attractions as long as they maintain that special "disney" theming that sets disney apart from other "amusement" parks. With only one or two "thrill" rides at each park; there is a tremendous strain on those attractions to handle the volumes of guest who do like the thrill rides. To those of you that don't or can't ride the thrill rides: more of these attractions will make for shorter wait times on the attractions that you do like; so everybody wins. disney is under alot of pressure to keep up with its competitors.

I think you see Disney trying to compete on certaiin levels with IOA. It has to appeal to the tweeners. DS who is 16 hasn't wanted to go the last two trips because in his mind, there are no rides for him. From what I've read MS is going tro be an incredible ride. Don't forget the Mickey's Philharmagic isn't a thrill ride.

Yes - Disney has also just added the family-oriented Dino-rama rides at AK, and the new 3-D atraction at MK (Philharmonic). Prior to that Disney added Animal Kingdom with its great animal walking trails and things. Some find that boring (my favorite park!).

So Disney is just covering all its bases!

I know how you feel Shakespear. I just can't do coasters--they make me miserable. However, as long as Disney keeps a balance, I'm OK with the addition of some thrill rides. I just hope that they don't revamp all the rides to the point that there is nothing for me!

I agree that Disney appears to be maintaining a good balance. I love the themed thrill rides - but I also love the classic rides. As long as there's a choice, I prefer the Disney parks as opposed to places like IOA that is almost exclusively thrill rides.

There are plans to change SpaceShip Earth? What exactly do they plan to do??

IOA only has three "thrill ride" roller coasters and Universal Studios doesn't have any. Those parks also have plenty for non-thrill ride lovers to do.
I think it's great that WDW is adding some "thrill" type rides, while keeping all their wonderful "calm" rides.
Sadly, children today are being brought up with video games and want the "thrills".

As others have said, Disney is trying to keep up with the other parks. The competition is extremely heavy right now. Disney will always have the slow rides, but it's the thrill rides that are hot right now. Besides, Disney thrill rides are still not as intense as those in other parks and Disney's thrill rides are more creative than any other theme park.

The rumor is that they will replace the inside of Spaceship earth with some type of "faster" through history "coaster" ride. The word is that the equipment, 20 years old now, is giving out and that the animatronics are pretty dated. No one is really sure if this change is true but given WDW trend toward "bigger, better, faster" rides, it really wouldn't surprise me.

I understood some of the other changes because if you took, Spaceship Earth, Horizons, World of Motion, and Imagination it was really just a continuation of one ride to another. They were good but if you had only been once, the mind tended to confuse what you saw and where you saw it. However, except for the new Imagination ride and Spaceship Earth the others are gone now and I for one would like to see some tradition stay. What better place would there be than in Spaceship Earth, updated but basically the same.

goofyernmost,
Thanks for the information. I too would be sorry to see SpaceShip Earth changed.

This same thought has crossed my mind, too. One of the things that attracted me to Disney way back when (1973 - 1st visit) was the fact that even with my sensitive stomach, there was so much I could do and enjoy!! The addition of Mission Space and the rumored new mountain at the AK make me wonder . . . . . . .

I have no problem with the addition of thrill-type rides to WDW but I hope that they will also continue to add attractions which display the Disney magic without the loops, dips and drops which most thrill rides involve. Like Mickey's PhilHarmagic.

Or, at the very least, retain the attractions already in place. I ride Spaceship Earth several times on each visit . . . I would be very sad if this were changed.

I love the idea of seeing a few more thrill rides in the Disney parks. They'll always have slower rides and kiddy rides, but I think the parks need a few more thrill rides to bring in a wider audience.

always be the well themed, slower paced rides that I love. Unfortunately, the 'new' imagination ride is hardly worth loving, and the replacements for Horizons and World of Motion are not slow paced. If Spaceship earth goes that way too . . . It's a good thing I don't go to the World for rides alone, but for the total experience. Otherwise, a one day hopper would suffice - as I hit the one or two rides in each park I CAN enjoy.

I too, ride Spaceship Earth SEVERAL times each trip. I also have to "say goodbye"
to WDW by making it my very last attraction for the whole trip.

( Only you DIS'ers can understand this )

The ONLY change I would like to see for SE is to make the track more smooth and less noisy.

As I get older I tolerate the thrill rides less and less. Things that didn't bother me at all 20 years ago, turns my stomach now. So far, I think they have a pretty good balance of slow rides and thrill rides.

But if they are slowly replacing the slow rides with ONLY thrill rides then I think THAT is not a good thing.

When we went to WDW I rode Rock n rollercoaster because of great theming and I like Aerosmith well enough. But I will never ride a regular corkscrew coaster anywhere! I hope Disney doesn't take away rides but I don't have a problem with them adding thrill rides - they make them unique!
