We too went for the cheap souvenirs. My DS brought back key chains for his classmates (in addition to the insane amount he keeps on his backpack) but I also got great (cheap) postcards and magnets. We scored 7-shirts for $20 (and yes, they aren't the best quality but for $3 each...) I got some cute Hawaiian bags, beach towels; macadamia nuts of course too!
The best deal however was the H1 highway sign that my DH bought- he haggled with the guy and paid $60 for it, and when we got back to Aulani, he got a couple of offers from people who wanted to buy it! One guy even offered him $200! We said if it didn't end up fitting in our suitcase he'd consider it LOL! Luckily it fit - barely!
I think it's worth it to go to see the artisans alone- while a lot of it wasn't my "style" I can appreciate the amount of work and craftsmanship that goes into it - it was really cool to see. But yes, there is definitely a lot of "crap" but one man's crap is another man's H1 highway sign!
