Why do people talk behind your back when you've never done anything to them?

IE - This girl in my class was talking about me because I was a couple minutes (3-4 minutes) late to the past two English classes. A)Why does she care if I'M late and B)It's none of her business when I show up to class anyways! Then she was bashing my other friend just because she was sitting in "our group's section" of the lecture hall. It's like...we weren't even doing anything that had to DO with you!

Ugh...I just don't get it...some people are just so rude when you've never done anything to them!!!
