I've never been for either, but I'd choose Halloween. I'm very picky lately because of my health, and I don't eat all that much anyways, so sometimes free dining isn't worth it to me! Besides, I'd love to see how they do Halloween, since their Christmas decor is insane!
you do realize you could do both...because the Halloween parties start DURING Free Dining...why not do both? The savings on food would pay for the Halloween party tickets, and then some
This year, the first Halloween party was on the Friday after Labor Day (Sept. 5) They actually had the Magic Kingdom Halloween decoration up on Labor Day Weekend.
What about halloween and the food and wine festival since you're both foodies. Thats what my sister and I did a few years ago and I loved we. We got to do all the halloween stuff at MK and the food and wine festival at Epcot.
Go for the free dining. By the first week in September the Magic Kingdom is decorated for Halloween and it looks awesome. If you are foodies you can't lose with the free dining. We've used it the last 3 years.

Just did that this year. Was at epcot for F&W and did MNSSHP. We did not have the dining plan, but know it was still going on. While at the F&W fest, we were asked several times when paying if we were on DDP or just a room charge.

The DDP is always going on...just certain times of year it has been offered for free to returning guests, those with a Disney Visa, and to those who travel during certain dates and book rack rate packages.

We were there the first part of Sept and did enjoy all of the Halloween decorations and did the magical party. Our twin grandbabies (4yrs old.) dressed up and had a wonderful time. If you decide to do the free dining, you will need to book specific dates, rack rates and then get your table service ressies in as many restaurants fill up fast. However, some of our friends only will book for FW, and really enjoy so that might be another option for you. Happy planning

Was not thinking you are right about DDP always going on. not sure if the free dining crosses over into the F&W at all. I think it may end
just before the F&W
We love the F&W. Went to epcot for part of a 3 different days. Had something from almost every stand.
