I have never rented out a reservation or points, and frankly had no real desire to do so. However, a friend of ours came to me over the weekend with questions about renting DVC, so I rented him a 2 bedroom villa at OKW over spring break! YIKES...Took all my 2011 OKW points to do it too!

I'm still a bit in shock at what I just did, but I'll get over it. I'm putting the money from it into our Hawaii trip for 2013.

YIKES! is right. :scared1::scared1: I can't believe you did it either.

Are you skipping WDW next year? I understand that Hawaii will be a big trip, but my goodness! Is it worth skipping a year? Must have been the heat of the moment and a very good friend, LOL.

I'm in the process of renting points to a good friend right now too. I can't call till next week for her reservations so hopefully I can get what she wants. I think $10 per point is fair. The studio runs $305/night through Disney so I think her paying that price per point is a great deal!

I bet it wasn't as hard as you though though, was it. The risk with friends and coworkers is that there is more risk for misunderstandings and more consequences if there are.

How did you determine what the price per point should be?

Many who rent use the Rent and Trade Board for guidance. $10 per point is the rate "most" ask for however you will often see points being offered for $11 and as high as $12 per point. And...if the points are due to expire someone can get a "deal" as these points are usually offered at a lower rate.

Hope everything goes smoothly for this rental, Diane. :thumbsup2
If I ever do rent, I'll probably go through one of the "pro" renters on these boards, since I'd have to deal with strangers.................my friends have gotten so spoiled by my inviting them to join me; they wouldn't think of renting! :rolleyes1
However, to be fair, they've all treated me to many a wonderful meal. :thumbsup2

Yes, it was the heat of the moment. Should we say a brain hiccup? Well I wont be skipping Disney completely, because I still have 3 years worth of AKV points to use, so we'll just plan on those for next December, and then I'll do OKW points for March of 2012. Besides, we have two trips in two consecutive months coming up. We are doing the first week of December and the last week of January.

I just gave them a list of 2 bedroom point costs per resort and told them I would charge $10/point. I don't care how or when they pay it, but it must be paid for by February 1st. Their trip is March 22-28. I told them that with such short lead time, they might have to settle for whatever I could get. To my surprise, they requested Old Key West!!! They want to be away from the hustle and bustle and liked the idea of a resort villa instead of hallways. Actually, AKV would have been fewer points, but they wanted OKW, so that's what they got.

I originally booked Sunday to Sunday and was told it had to be a lock off. Then they found cheaper airfare for Monday to Monday, so I called back this morning to adjust the dates and was able to get the dedicated on after all! I think that indicates that maybe there is some pretty good availablility for Spring break time yet, because usually dedicated 2 bedrooms are booked before lock offs.

It's something about the first time that makes it hard for people (myself included!). Ok, you did it!! You go girl! Now, get over that renting scare and take this experience as a positive. Now you have a plan "B" for your points!:goodvibes

Not too worried about that in this case. This is someone I work with regularily at our Church, and I've helped them plan Disney trips before too. I actually think they are planning to buy DVC now. They took the tour last time. I told them this was a GOOD time to check out the resale market, so they will take this trip to decide where they want to buy in.

I'm with you. I never thought we would ever rent out our DVC but that's exactly what we have done for our trip that starts saturday. Our situation is a bit different from yours. We had a family back out on us at the last minute and thought for sure we were going to lose the points. A family member of our DSIL offered to rent the reservation from us and saved the day so to speak. It all worked well but I hope I never have to do it again. Our DVC points are gold to us. :lmao:

Diane, Diane, Diane. :sad2: You've started down the slippery slope. Next you'll be bringing back old mugs and parking at the BW.

;)

:lmao: Don't worry, Deb....It's just not "me". LOL, I don't even drink pop/soda, so mugs mean nothing here! As for parking at BW....eh...I'd rather park at BC!!:rotfl:

:rotfl:Too Funny!!

Deb & Bill you are the last of the Mohicans!:goodvibes

Used ALL your points? :scared1:

Although when I first bought DVC I told myself it'd be nice to rent some to cover the dues, in reality I find there just aren't enough points to keep myself happy to start with.

So what are your plans for 2011 & 12 prior to your HI trip? "I'm going to go see how the other half lives and try the Grand Floridian/Poly with 40% AP discount" is an acceptable answer.

Well, not quite all my points, but all my remaining OKW points for 2011 were used for his reservation. I still have 3 years worth of AKV points to use in 2011, so I'll be staying there next December, and I already have a January 2011 trip planned. So I wont be lacking in 2011 for sure. In 2012 I'll have both contracts of OKW back to normal, so no issue there either. I will want to conserve some of those for a possible direct exchange though. I figure in 2012 I'll be able to bend my rules for a change and do a studio somewhere. Heck, I might even stay at BCV or BWV for a change! Seems only fitting since I'm sailing in uncharted waters anyway!

You are such a maverick. A DVC Rogue. Next you'll be using points to stay at a non-DVC Disney resort.

Turn in your DVC purist button. ;)
