beef!!!
Went to sams club yesterday and was so surprised how much of an increase on
beef…..chuck roast was over $4.00 a pound I think it was like $4.69…..that is so crazy!!!!
Going to have to change our way of eating I guess

Yup. Milk is supposed to go up for the same reason. We're a soy milk family so I'm already used to paying too much for milk :sad2:

We don't eat much beef, but if you have a crockpot, you can buy cheaper cuts and they will get tender and taste great after cooking in the crockpot for 6 or 8 hours.

We don't eat a lot of beef but also pay $4.99 lb for organic grass fed beef. I haven't seen an increase on that price yet.

Brace for it to get worse. Water is available, but is not being released to the Central Valley of California. I'm sure some say "so what", but the crops not going in the ground today will nit be available 6 months from now for you to purchase and any that are available will command top dollar pricing.

Much of the problem is political, you can read about it yourself. The farmers have already paid for the wAter, but it is nit being released. This is nit a new problem, instead it has been building to crisis the last couple of years. Sadly, We'll all be hurt over the tug of war going on in Washington (if you nodded in agreement with the "reward our friends and punish our enemies" statement, be aware it was a poison pill that you will eventually have to swallow)

I feel a tiny bit better about our (at the time) expensive side of organic grassfed beef that's in the freezer too! :lmao:

Cheap! Walmart garbage is almost $5 around me.

Lucky my father-in-law raises our grass fed beef :D I have a little over 100 pounds in the freezer right now :thumbsup2

We eat mostly venison now but DH only got a small doe this season. Normally, he gets either one large or two small deer and we fill the freezer with about 80 pounds of ground venison and steaks. This year, we have to stretch a meager 30 pounds of ground venison and about 10 pounds of steaks. When I look at the prices of beef (DH didn't get a deer last year:( ), I cringe. I'm glad that I decided to try venison. My kids love it too so we have really tapered off from our beef consumption.

Its not the drought out west that is causing beef prices to go up its the drought from 2012 that is causing the issue. They had to kill off a lot of the livestock while they could still recoup money out of the heard. Because of the increase in slaughtering previously there still hasn't been enough time for the beef farmers to recover and raise enough cattle.

"the country’s cattle herd is the smallest it’s been since 1952, largely because of the drought."

"The drought forced many small ranchers to sell their entire herds and abandon the business altogether."

Venison is great in ground fashion, when its in a steak its a little more acquired taste but you can do things to reduce the taste difference between Beef vs Deer.

We use ground venison for tacos, chili, lasagna, meatballs, meatloaf, and anything else one would typically use beef for. We really don't notice the difference. It is hard for me to brown it up though....it stinks;). I typically prepare it with a little onion and garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce which really almost eliminates the gamey taste. It doesn't help the smell though.

This is what I do as well. Any meal that isn't "straight up" meat I will do venison. When I make burgers I mix half beef with the venison and we don't notice a big difference. I'm with you though...the smell of venison is definitely one that can throw ya for a loop if you aren't used to it. :crazy2:

We eat venison too, but if you added the price of hunting club dues, gas, bullets, accesories for the gun, hunting license, hunting stand, meat processor (or the equipment to do it yourself), etc....we could probably have grass fed organic steak instead for less :rotfl2

The price of meat can be crazy. I recommend looking into a local farmer, if you can. We are going to buy a 1/4 of a cow for 3.65 lb, which includes processing. The meat we receive will include about 45 lbs of ground beef, several roasts, many excellent cuts of steak(the prices of the cuts of steak are over $10 a lb at the grocery store.) if you have room and the funds at once, it a great buy. You could also see if someone or a couple of someone's would be interested in splitting one with you.
