I'm fed up with getting these "free" books in the mail. You know the ones, here's your free book to look at, if you want to keep it do nothing, if you don't want any more just send the form/book back. Hello I didn't even want it in the first place! If I wanted it I would have ordered it! Now I have to deal with it!
Sorry but it just bugs me! One more detail to take care of. Why do I have to do anything, or why should I even be responsible for something that I did not ask to receive!!!!!
Thanks for letting me vent.

Write to the company to explain to them your situation and have them take your name off of their mailing list. Until they do, your name will still be in their system, and you will recieve them.

See that is what annoys me. It the fact that I have to send something back or write to a company that has sent me something without my consent. If I don't take care of it, or if it slips my mind (it is after all not something I ordered to begin with) I then wind up having to pay for books that are sent afterwards because I forgot to send back the original statement saying no I don't want to order you books. I just think it is wrong that companies are allowed to do this. I just feel that it should be the opposite way. If you want to receive more books return the invoice.
Again, why should I be responsible to have to even respond to something like that? I didn't ask for it in the first place.
Oh well, I know it is silly, but I guess it is just my pet peeve.

It's not silly, Margie, it IS annoying.

My Mom got lots of these. I checked with a co-worker who is a consumer advocate, Clark Howard, who told me one thing I'll never forget, you NEVER have to pay for something you did not order! If they sent it to you, bad on them!!

:teeth:

Don't even take it out of your box. Just write "return to sender" on it and leave it in there. Your mail carrier will take it back. That way, you can't forget to return it. Just bring a pen when you check your mail! :D

Not to hijack your thread, Margie, but Robin......... I love Clark Howard, I used to listen to him all the time when I lived in Conyers, and read his column in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Margie (back on track), if you get something you didn't order, don't open it, just send it back refused. THey will have to pay the postage. Less junk in your house, too.

Hijack 2!

Yep, he's the greatest! Everyone in Atlanta quotes him, and I was thrilled to just walk down the hall and talk to him!

crazyme5kids,
My sister used to have this problem with Columbia House(their video deparment). Finally she got so tired of it after countless calls and emails that the last time she talked to someone, she told them that if she received just one more video she was keeping it and would not be paying for it. They NEVER sent another video that she didn't order.
Sometime a little threat goes a long way. ::yes::

Thanks everyone! I know to just send the books back, but sometimes they have a way of getting into the house (kids, husband) and being put in a place that I don't look for a few days. Or I am to blame, I just bring all the mail in and don't bother looking at it right away. As you can tell it really, really irks me that I need to do anything, up to and including making a phone call to complain about it. I have better things to do with my time (like vent on the Dis LOL)!

My mom used to get these alot. She called the post office and the postmaster told her that not only do you not have to pay for it if you didn't order it but you can also keep it. There is a USPS statute number that he gave her to quote to them when telling them that not only was she not paying, but as long as they were sending something she didn't order, she was keeping it.

They stopped sending them to her.

Soooo..... If I am understanding this correctly, I get a book to review in the mail, if I don't respond to them and they send me other shipments (it seems like they are always $14.95 per shipment), I am not obligated to pay? I have always shelled out the money in the past when I got a shipment that I didn't want because I figured since I didn't respond or missed the deadline to respond that I was obligated to pay (yes, even though I did not order it in the first place).
Does this mean I can take a stance or make a statement! I can picture it now! Stacks of unopened non-ordered books! Other people will catch wind of it and do the same! Then finally maybe these companies will stop sending me books I don't want to begin with!
Hey a girl can dream can't she?

Yep, you DON'T have to pay for them OR send them back. They count on the part of the population who do not know this statute.

Gee, I wish I would have know that before. To quote Tami on The Apprentice "I got duped". I paid one time when I didn't send them back in time and of course, that enrolled me into the "club". I'll know from now one.

I hate those clubs. Have you ever tried to call them and cancel? They will do their darnedest to argue you to death. They just keep on and on and on. You have to be rude with them to get off that list.

I am having that problem with a dvd club. I did join and I bought stuff, but not enough to fulfill their requirements. Well I tried to fulfill them, I bought 8 dvd's at christmas. When I bought them from the site it said that my requirement was fulfulled and I was eligible for some stupid discount next time I ordered. When I got them my statement said I still need to buy more. I emailed them and they said too bad you didn't buy enough. Now I am getting emails saying how I must purchase more and have to fulfill the requirement. I sent all the dvd's back and if they bother me again I might have to pee in their cheerios.
