My 7 year old was told to work on his pitching so he can pitch for his team this year. He has worked really hard and took a class with a pitching coach on wed. The pitching coach was shocked he has never been coached on how to pitch before. He said he picked up the mechanics really fast and he hasn't ever seen a 7 year old do so well. I am guessing that ds will be the pitcher for his team this year since the pitcher from last year moved up. Here is my question for parents of little pitchers. My son was moved up to his league two years early and is still a year younger then he is spose to be in this league. He will be competing against 10 year olds. It didn't worry me last year when he was in the field, but being so close to homeplate it worries me a little. He is a good player and has never been hit by a ball in the field but do you think it is ok for him to pitch being so little. There is a small part of me that thinks he may be a year to young for it, but then the other part of me thinks the coach would never put him in a dangerous situation. What do you all think? My son is so excited to be the pitcher and I don't think I could take that away from him, but I also don't want him to be in danger since he is young. Dh thinks I am crazy and need to let the boy be a boy, but I know if it was dd he would feel the same way I do. Double standard!

I dont have any advise. I dont have a son...and my dd only does bowling. Anyway I just wanted to say way to go! and congrats to your son! Maybe he has a future career as a baseball pitcher :)

That would be nice! I could use a little help and be rich! :rotfl2:

Congratulations! :thumbsup2
Why not bring up your concerns to the coach? He might be able to answer your questions better than I. :wave2:

Dh doesn't want me too!

I would ask the coach/es. I do think it best for a young kid like that to play with his age, HUGE differences between 7 and 10 year olds, JMO.

His age group would still be t-ball, which I think he is to old for. He has literally been hitting a ball from a pitch over our heads since he was 18 months old. The coach is the one who told him to make sure he works on his pitching during the off season so I know he is ok with it. It is me who isn't sure about it. Everyone else thinks he is ready for it. I would be fine with it if he was pitching to other 7 and 8 year olds but 10 going on 11 is so old so it worries me a little. If he was back farther in the field I would be o.k with it too. He played in this league last year and did great, but he wasn't the pitcher like they want him to be this year. We ran in to the coach last week and he asked if he was working on his pitching so it sounds like this is a for sure thing.

I understand your concern. My older son is 10 yrs old and plays on a travel team. There is no way I would let my DS8 pitch to his team or the teams he plays against. And my DS8 has been called a "genius" in baseball(not my words)since he could walk.He does fill in in the outfield with the team when they need him though. That having been said I would let him pitch to the 10 yr olds in our regular league.May be strange but that is my gut talking. :) Some of the boys wear mouth guards and chest protectors under their clothes.Maybe that would help you feel better.

I hope your son has a blast in baseball and let us know how it goes. :) My DS8 has his first regular season game tomorrow and he can't go to sleep.

Good luck to your son! My son loves baseball too. I am probably being a paranoid mother! I will have to ask my son about wearing the mouth guard though. I doubt he would go for that since nobody else does. I am sure dh wouldn't either. Dh thinks I am crazy as it is with being so worried! :rotfl2:
