I am so mad at myself!

We left last Wednesday for a fun-filled 3 days to Disney. Before we left (actually we do this for everything every time we go away for a couple days) I unplugged my computer, just in case of power surges or something shorts out. So we got home Saturday and plugged everything in, my DH plugs his computer in and hops online. I plug mine in and turn it on, it goes through the boot sequence and says no Hard Drives found :scared1:. Shut it down, unplug it and replug, turn it on, still nothing found. Shut it down again, made sure all the wires to everything were snug and tried again, nothing. Great, motherboard is dead on those ports. Since I need a computer for work, I headed to Best Buy and got one. Just over $500 that I really didn't want to spend, but needed it. Loaded all of my work stuff and told DH that I'll shop around for a new MB (I usually build my own rigs, but Best Buy doesn't have those kinds of components in-store).

So today I decided to play around with the one that was broke. Pulled out all the wires and looked at them. I noticed one of the wires to my HD was cracked at the end. Swapped it out, put it all back together and lo-and-behold it works now! Now I have a brand new computer that I really didn't need and if I hadn't been so tired from travel I probably could have saved the $500 and got a new cable instead. Now I am mad at myself for not really looking into the problem and wasting the money.

If it isn't past the return period, you could take the computer back to Best Buy. You will probably have to pay a restocking fee, but that is cheaper than keeping a computer you don't want or need.

Usually there's a 14-day return policy no questions asked. Why can't you return it? And if it's within 30 days they'll just charge a restocking fee.

I would return it if my lovely DH hadn't torn the box apart and put it in the recycle bin. I try to tell him we need to hang onto those things for awhile in case we need to return anything, but he never listens :headache:. The recyclers came yesterday so not much I can do about it now. At least if we need a computer we'll have one.

You could offer it for sale on Craigslist (free) or eBay (might get a little more for it). I'd be mad too!

Call the store and see if they will take it back without the box. It's always worth a try. ;)
