Ugh ~ I am at my wits end. I don't understand why she keeps pottying inside the house. This morning I got her out of her crate and took her outside to her yard to go potty. I stood out there with her for 20 minutes and she didn't go. So I brought her inside and put her in the kitchen so I could go get my son out of the shower. I wasn't gone 5 minutes and she had p**ped & p**d on the floor. :headache:

This dog is either in the kitchen or on a leash with one of us somewhere else in the house. She goes outside regularly, we praise her when she does....she has been doing great lately but now we seem to be sliding backwards again.

I've even looked in to sending her somewhere for training for a month but it is almost $1000 and I cant swing that right now.

I don't know what else to do....

1,000 a month , wow, I will come over and clean up after him for 500 a month

Not sure how old your puppy is or how long you have been trying but my dogs both took lots of time.

OK, you took her out and she didn't go. You should expect that she will go in the house then.

Do you use the command to Potty? We say "Go Potty"...
When the dogs start goofing we say "Hurry".

Have you taught your dog vocabulary? Dogs can learn up to 200 words.

When your dog is on leash in the house are you training? Sit, down, stay, outside, potty...etc...
When you say "no" say "no ____" like no bark.

Your biggest thing is to catch the dog in the act of going potty in the house and correct the dog.
2 corrections for Butters and he got it.

Gracie on the other hand is a different story. For some reason she wants to go on carpet. Thankfully downstairs is hardwood, however this does not help train her so we bring her upstairs as a treat on leash.
So far we haven't been able to fix this...yet.

You may also want to get a cleaning spray that eliminates odor. Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean the dog can't. They tend to go in the same area. Also, there are sprays to train a dog to go where you want it to go and you can try that. Good luck!

We had a puppy that we could walk for 20 minutes or so outside and she would do nothing. As soon as she came into the house she would wet on the floor.

Finally we took treats outside. When she finally wet outsiide she got a treat. It got so she would run outside, wet, then race over for the treat. It only took a few days and she was dying to go out and get the treat. It was the only thing that worked with her.

They also say crate training is the best way to train a dog!

Some dogs need to move to be able to go potty. Perhaps your pup needs to take a walk and not just stand around. Carrying a treat with you and saying "Good Potty!" when she goes and popping a treat with a "Good girl!" when she's done is also a good idea. I would also get a spray bottle of Nature's Way enzyme and spray down your kitchen floor to make sure the potty smell is gone. If she has gone on carpet, a black light will show the stains so you can use a liquid concentration of Nature's Way on it/

My puppy is only 10 weeks old and we are also struggling with the potty issue too. She is still soiling her crate and kitchen pen when I'm gone. I came back today after 2 hours to find her covered in urine. Yuck. Into the bathtub she went!

When you take her out, wait for 10 mins, no longer. If she goes, immediate praise and reward. If she doesn't, back in the house and in the crate, no freedom. Wait 20 mins and repeat. Do this until she goes, no pee, no freedom. It is a pain in the butt, however, it will get her in the routine quickly. Good luck, we have a 15 week old pup and they can be trying.

Poop Fiona poop. :rotfl2:

Send her to Erin's for a week and the dog will poop on comand! Save that $1000 for DW in December!!

This is excellent advice- it works. What kind is your pup?

First congrats on the puppy. It is a very trying time for the potty training. I have a 7 month old GS puppy and the first few weeks I had her, I was wondering if I had lost all of my mind. I crate trained her, now she knows how to open the back screen door and let herself out. But she is still too young for me to leave in the house by herself, so when there is no one home, either she is outside with other dog, or in the crate. It has to do with consistancy. I learned that when she woke up, take her out, after she is fed, about 45 minutes, take her out and stay out there until she goes. All dogs are different. Dogs don't really have a developed kidney/bladder until after a year old sometimes, so they will have accidents.
As for 1,000 for training, no way have I paid that much money to get training, I could see if you were having your dog trained in agility or Schutzen-know I spelled that wrong, but for sit, stay, that is a bit steep.
Good luck

Our Gracie, now 3 months was luckily pretty easy to potty train. We crate trained her, take her out immediately upon her waking up, make sure to take her out about 45 mins. after eating, and after any serious play. We also always had treats in our pockets to reward right away when she goes. Our biggest challenge still is getting her to go in the area of the yard away from the kids swing set, she prefers to go at the end of the slide  . Good luck, puppies certainly are a challenge.

Big ditto on this.

To add to that, it just takes time. They are babies and don't get it naturally, unfortunately. What breed is your dog?

Harley, my Shih Tzu, was determined to never be trained. He's just not a very smart dog, unfortunately, and just didn't get it I guess. We got a 2nd dog when he was a little over a year old - did all the same training methods except we never did those dang useless potty pads like with Harley, and that dog (Winston) trained in about 3 months completely (we rescued him at 6 weeks of age).

Well wouldn't you know that Winston trained Harley for us about 4 months ago. Harley was 19 months old when he was finally trained - and only by another (much smarter) dog. Can I tell you how thankful I am for Winston?!?!

All that to say, it takes time. Some dogs are great and train within a few months. Some with a few weeks. Some take a few years ;)

Learn to use that crate - next time, put her in the crate when you leave the room. That and our bed were the only spots Harley would not potty in.

I respectfully disagree with the prior advice-I have had 5 Springer Spaniels-and it never took me longer than a week to potty train any of them.(Yes, they were all puppies-usually 10 weeks) You are the Alpha-or you should be. When they went out-when I thought they needed to..(and yes mine are crate trained..always) my dogs never came in until they went-I know it's a pain, I live in upstate NY-so it wasn't the most convenient. But they do not come IN until they go. It took alot of patience for that week-and sometimes we took turns, but it works. I think the longest I ever waited was 45 minutes-but they were NOT going to win. I agree with the treats and the praise-but they do not come in until they go!! Believe me, you will thank me in a week.

Thanks for the info again. I can honestly say I have done all of the above. We have Nature's Miracle for cleaning up after her, she is crate trained, I tell her to "go potty" and praise her when she does. I've tried the treat thing and she doesn't seem to care whether or not she gets a treat, her buddy next door, Kobe, comes in the dog yard and does his thing and it hasn't seemed to help train her. She is 7 months old! I know people say that it can take over a year but SHEESH it's getting old. My carpets are destroyed. The stains just keep coming back after steam cleaning them.

I just needed a good vent and a reminder to keep at it. My mistake this morning was not putting her directly back in her crate.

Noodles: You think you're so smart. I've already talked to Erin about sending Lilo to her for training. She said when she gets back from Mississippi this summer she would be happy to. Now, guess what D's response was??? :rotfl2:

Ha! I think the $1000 included training, not just scooping. Thanks for the offer tho

I feel your pain... I'm sorry the other dog isn't helping any either. Harley seemed to figure out how to tell us when he needed to go by watching Winston do that. He never did that instinctively, he was very quiet, yet Winston knew immediately what to do. Weird. Now, Harley lets us know!

DH and I practically gave up on Harley after awhile. It beats you down so much! Some dogs, and breeds, just struggle with it. And some breeds will NEVER be 100% trained.

(the stains will return after awhile when you get them professional steamed cleaned which makes things even worse)

Keep it up - it eventually gets better. You're doing it all right!

I have to agree...I have trained lots of dogs and when you take them out get a command like Go Pee or Go Potty. Walk around until they do something. If they don't within a certain amount of time, back to the crate. Do what you have to do, then back out. No fun until potty. I have had some pretty hard headed breeds to contend with, but you have to be the boss and no nonsense! I wouldn't even talk to them when I put them back. Just back in the crate and then I would take them back out.

Hang in there...you'll get it!
