Our dishwasher has not been cleaning the dishes all that well for about the last 3 months. We have tried cleaning it with Tang and vinegar.

Well today I decided to take it apart to clean it. Yuk, disgusting, made me want to vomit.

I can't begin to describe what the material was that was caked on the inner workings on the washer. Gross beyond belief.

That happened to me two years ago. We'd purchased this "great" Whirlpool Gold dishwasher when we'd built our house. Only 4 years old and it wasn't cleaning. Not only that, it was gross inside. There was actually mold starting to grow on the tracks that hold the top rack in. I called Sears and they sent a repair man. The heating element was bad. They replaced that & I ran some Dishwasher Magic through a couple of times. I had my just-like-new washer again! I haven't had any problems since.

Tang is also used because of the citric acid.

OP- we also took apart our dishwasher because it was leaving stuff (food) on our dishes-really gross. The stuff we found in there was disgusting-pink, slimy and smelly stuff.

We also used Tang, vinegar, Dishwasher Magic, and other things to try to remedy our problem. The ONLY thing that made a difference was to use a rinse agent. We had never used one before but ever since we started, the dishes have been clean. We always know when we need to add more, cause the dishes start coming out dirty again. We've been using Jet Dry.

Hey you know what I am talking about :)

Why would you bother with tang or lemon koolaid? We just run it with a bunch of bleach every few months.

bleach is corrosive and is damaging to plastics.

Our dishwasher has been idle for over 20 years. I wonder what sorts of things are growing inside of it.

Then why does bleach come in plastic bottles?

We had a problem of non cleaning and the little blade that works like a garbage disposal (it chops food particles as water is pumped through the system) had gotten a tooth pick stuck in it and the blade was not turning. This caused the screen behind it to clog and so virtually no water was being pumped to the top rack. The entire pump/motor system in our Kenmore (never again) had to be replaced as the blade stripped its attachment to the motor. Luckily I was able to do it myself.

Yuck.

It occurs to me that dishwashers are very easy to replace.

We NEVER USE BLEACH here because of the horrible condition of the water table in this country and all the cancer that accompanies it. I'll stick with Tang thanks!!! Be kind to your Mother Earth.:lovestruc

Read the box on your dishwasher detergent.

It's main cleaning agent is... bleach....

I use bleach all the time in my white laundry, cleaning my bath, etc...
While, in it's strongest form, it is indeed hazardous, I have heard that bleach breaks down and is not a problem.
There are many many other agents that are way more hazardous and do not break down.

NOTE TO SELF.... IF DISHWASHER DOES NOT CLEAN WELL, OR SMELLS FUNKY, CALL REPAIRMAN IMMEDIATELY!!!! ;)

How can this thread not have a puke smiley?

Once bleach is mixed with water all it takes is sunlight and it breaks down into harmless by-products. If anything bleach makes water more drinkable not less.
