I am horrified! WWYD?!

How do I correct my mail error, with the least amount of fallout?

  • Send it along in a new envelope readdressed with correct zipcode, and no one has to know!

  • Call the RSVP number, and admit in full humiliation that I opened it by mistake!

  • Pretend it never happened, and hide under a rock for being such a moron

When this happens to me I call the sender.

Last year an attorney's office actually mailed me someone's private information. I wasn't looking at the addressee name so it was done before I could help it. I was really upset too

ITA! I'd be more humiliated if I actually showed up at the shower. :lmao:

OMG! A little OT, but I know someone who did this with a birthday party! Her little girl got an invitation to a birthday party from school. She RSVP's that "Susie" will be there and she goes out and buys a gift for the little guy, and shows up. Turns out, her little girl doesn't recognize ANY of the kids! What happened was, a directory went home to all the parents of 1st graders, with the names and addresses of all the 1st graders.(parents had to give permission to be in the directory) "susie" had the same name (first and last) as another girl, so the mom must have guessed at which one to send the invite to.

She was mortified, and left. The poor kid wanted to stay, but her mom had to explain they couldn't because they DIDN'T KNOW ANYONE.

My mailman seems to get mail messed up more than usual. I open and dont look. Its happened to me many times that it was not intended for me. I put it back in my mailbox with wrong address marked on it. In your case if you know the correct address I would send it out asap to the correct recipient.

Not a big deal.

OK, I called! I spoke with the sweetest lady, grandmother of the "mother to be" she was super nice and said with "that side" of the family there would have been big drama if one cousin didnt get the invite. lol. :goodvibes

This is one of those SLOW DOWN moments. If I had just taken one second to look at the envelope I would have noticed the name was not mine. The address was, but the name was not even close. It was just stupid stupid stupid. lol.

I feel much better now. ;)

PS if I remailed it or sent it back, they would miss the RSVP date. They certainly didn't allow much time for transit!

That was sweet of you to call, and now it's all fixed. :goodvibes

And...I also open my mail without really looking, especially if I'm in a hurry to sort out the junk mail. So...I have accidentally opened my neighbor's 401K statement.:scared1:

Talk about mortified!! I just taped it shut and put it back in the mailbox. (it had the correct address; it was just put in our box by mistake) and never admitted to my neighbor that I was the one to open it.

I wouldn't feel bad at all that you opened the invite. After all, it did have your address and at least it wasn't something really private, like medical test results, or bank statements.

Nope, not at ALL. The error is entirely with the SENDER.

As Robinrs states, the sorting machine and the live sorters work from the ZIP code, then left, then up. There's actually preferred (for delivery accuracy) format information at usps.com.

ZIP code? Correct
State? Matches ZIP - correct
City? Exists in state and matches ZIP correct
Street name? Exists in city and matches ZIP - correct
Street number? Exists on street and matches ZIP - correct

With all that accurate information, it sure as heck LOOKS like it was being delivered to the right location. I do understand the name was different, I really do - but everything else worked.

The only party to blame in this situation is the person who addressed the envelope.
