I am having trouble giving up butter!

We have been eating and cooking with butter forever. Now, I have switched to those low fat "spreads" to cut down on cholesterol and fat. I am using Land O' Lakes' Light Butter With Canola Oil and it is just not 'doing it' for me! I can't taste it on the food so I want to put more on...which I know I shouldn't. I find myself wanting to give up on a spread altogether and just put more salt on the food....which isn't going to work! Kinda' defeats the purpose! **sigh** Getting older isn't as much fun as I hoped it would be! :(

i would suggest you pick your battles. I don't think conservative use of butter is bad. Do you use alot? I'm not familar with the spread you are using but some butter replacements are worst then butter.
In our house we don't use alot of butter. I actually put the pound in the freezer and pull out a stick occasinally. But when I make cookies I use real butter. If I have a piece of toast and don't want peanut butter I use butter. Sometimes I put butter on my potatoes.

I think we do us it alot. I did not realize it until DHs doctor told him to cut out some things. When I sat down and put together a list of things I put butter in....it becomes all the baking, all the frying of foods, all the food on the table....seemed like everything. We all really need to cut back but DH needs to cut back the most. I did not realize it but I was cooking with butter and then he was adding several tablespoons of butter at the table!! :(

I went to this low-fat spread and use Pam to fry foods. I don't understand why this one area is such a problem for us....or me, I guess!

I feel your pain, we have switched to margarine and ugg its horrible. I have told dh that I refuse to bake with anything but butter though.

What about the butter "sprays". I think they're yummy. When I was on weight watchers I used it all the time. I'd spray my veggies with it, we'd make light alfredo sauce and spray some in it to get a buttery taste. DH would even spray it on his toast (but only because he was too lazy to get the butter out). :rotfl:

Otherwise, try reducing it slowly. I think a little is ok.

Yeah, I agree! I still bake with butter. I tried baking something with that spread once....won't do that again. I can't even make popcorn with that stuff. It has no favor.

I say keep the butter!!! You gotta keep your wagon greased to keep it rolling :teeth:

You don't mean the Pam-type stuff do you?

I've used Promise for years, I like it even better then butter. It has a sweet, light taste to it.

I think I Can't Believe ITs Not Butter is pretty good - have you tried it.

Consider if you can just cut down the amount of butter you use. DH needs to watch cholesterol and I need to watch fat, but we use basically real butter, we just dont use a lot of it. The margarines and sprays are full of tons of other chemicals and ingredients and more importantly trans-fat, which can be pretty bad for you.

But, I'm on an all natural kick lately, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I have tried it in the past and I do like the flavor. Have they come out with one that has 2g or less of saturated fat? Oh how I hate this number crunching.... :(

I'm on a diet right now for 2 months. I say go "cold turkey" with butter. I just cut it out and concentrate on the flavor of the rest of the food. For frying, I just use a dab of butter and I don't bake anything while we (Husband and I) are on this diet.

There's so much commotion about the trans fats in margarines now. It seems like butter is healthier!

This what I am thinking about, too. I am hearing alot lately about Pam having silicone, or something to that affect, but I haven't read the label.

I have not tired Promise yet. I have been looking at the saturated fat numbers and, if it has 2g or less, I will probably get around to it eventually! ;)

Well, that is interesting! Boy, just eating butter and living with the consequences just seems easier! **sigh**

I use "I Can't Believe it's not buuet Light" I really like it...

Ok, I didn't know they make a light. I'll have to take a look at that. I have noticed that our stores don't all carry the same products and they are very limited in their light choices. I'll have to take a look at the store the next time I go grocery shopping. I would like to try a few different things to see if there is a light I like before just giving up and going back to butter.

The margarines aren't really any better for you.

Have you tried the stuff called Smart Beat? It is a spread that has plant sterols in it to help lower cholesterol. My FIL had a heart attack last year and his cardiologist recommended this. He has done a fabulous job at lowering his cholesterol and he said that Smart Beat has been a big help. I used it once and it isn't too bad. It's not really like butter, but more like margarine.

Also, have you noticed how different the margarine is now that they removed the trans fats. My container of Parkay will hardly stop melting if I leave it on the counter for more than 30 minutes or so.
