For people who have made the drive, what's the better choice for clearing the JAX area??? Anticipate we should be hitting JAX around 6:00 PM or so.

Thanks in advance!

Go around. Hopefully Rush hour will be over by 6:00 p.m. Don't go down I95, you run into people going to dinner. If you stay on 295, you won't even know you by-passed Jacksonville.

I hate the I-95 through Jacksonville (plus they were signs announcing constructin a couple of weeks ago) and the I-295 takes too long. Go the other way around, I think it's called the 9A or some such thing. It does have a large bridge though (some people don't like big bridges so here's the warning). Happy trails!

Agree-avoid 95 through Jacksonville-especially at that hour. 295 has always worked fine for us--no experience with that new route.

I would not go straight through on I-95 anywhere near the rush hour(s). I'd say beltline as well.

We take 295 and it's always worked out well.

The 9A is the other half of the circle for the I-295 except it doesn't take you 25 extra miles out of your way. Give it a try! It's not quite complete, it does have 1 stoplight, but usually it is green---we've only had to stop for it once. The rest is clear sailing freeway with some great views of cruise ships in port. :)

I was in Jacksonville on Monday and even during the mid-afternoon there was a pretty long back up at the I-95/I-10 junction due to construction of new flyover ramps. Definitely recommend taking I-295 beltway around the west side of Jacksonville.

State Road 9A (Future I-295) is an option but during evening rush hour I'm not sure how congested it gets in the one remaining section that is not freeway.

9A is your best choice and the traffic should be ok heading southbound. Northbound on 9A gets more backed up during rush hour- mostly due to rerouting northbound traffic in the construction zone.

I just found out about "9A" last night myself. Will probably give that route a try.

As for the poster above, we have to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel so the bridge thing doesn't bother me in the least.

Thanks to all for the advice!

Love the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel !! Go with 295 at that time of day
