I-95 campground suggestions needed

Rest assured we are not driving speed demons. For those interested in how we can do 14.5 hours...We are 30 minutes outside of DC. Highway all the way. We drive at night minimizing traffic. We do the speed limit. Noting that in the Carolina's, I think the speed limit is about 70. There are 3 drivers. Been doing the east coast run many times and it's 14.5 hours with minimal stops. We don't stop for long, rather we utilize the rest stops for picnic style breakfast, lunches potty breaks and some jumping jacks. We tow a p/up with an expedition, thus getting great gas mileage still. We were considering moving up in the RV world but I don't want to sacrifice the fuel or deal with the towing of another vehicle. Our FW trips are always 8 or more days, so we don't feel rushed. We have alot of energy for the trip down but from experience, we now break the travel into 2 days coming home.

Safe travels everyone.
Speed demon is sort of a relative term. 70MPH towing a popup is most definitely in the speed demon category for me. There are actually many p/ups out there with tires rated to a max of 65MPH. Please check yours to be on the safe side!

Yeah, Ed nailed it pretty much, without a general sense of how far you want to go would depend on suggestions.

But if your just comming down I95 from PA then I can make the following Suggestions that are still a reasonable to or from FW.

Farthest North - South of the Boarder campground. Nothing special but level and cheap for an overnight. About 12 hours from FW.

SC I95 Exit 53 - New Green Acres - Level, huge pull through sites. About 7 hours from FW.

SC I95 Exit 33 - Point South KOA - More trees but friendly staff and level sites. About 6 hours from FW depending on stops.

I will tell you to avoid Santee Lakes campground. Not very level, lots of trees, and unless they redid the bathrooms, I was more scared about their condition then disappointed.

DEFINITELY avoid Santee Lakes. We made the mistake of staying there on our way down last August. My kids said the place looked haunted. Just dark and deserted. LOTS of ants. And the bathrooms were just scary.

On the way back north, we stayed at RVacation with no complaints. Clean. Bit of highway noise, but nothing that bothered us with the AC on.

But the website says it's "the most scenic campground in SC"...

It has to be true if they put it on the internet...

If I where going northbouth I would push for florance or south of the border for overnight stops. Southbound I would push for new green acres or point south. Santee lakes was a mistake stop and I dont even use the facilities as I have my own.

3 drivers I could see you being able to do the push and get down there. But even in the 70mph zones my trucks sweet spot with the 5th wheel is about 65-68. Any slower and it downshifts to keep the power up reducing fuel milage, any faster and it just does not feel safe.

This link http://www.i95exitguide.com/camping/index.php might help give you an idea of what is available along the route. Before we left I checked all CG reviews and also checked TripAdvisor, as well as getting opinions from this board. I then graded which CG was a possible stay or which to stay far away from LOL. We only stop at the ones which are rated acceptable and then keep driving past the exits of the bad ones. Sometimes there are many miles between some of the more acceptable CGs so this will make the decision as to how far we will go for the day. Be safe and have a great trip.:cool1:

we travel from Rocky Mount NC when we go to disney, and I do belive it takes us around 9.5 to 10 hours one way. however this year i do belive we are stopping at the wal-mart around Savannah GA and staying the night for our December trip.

On our trip home we ended up spending the night at the Walmart in Petersburg VA, we shared the parking lot with a couple of RVs and a couple truckers.
