We are driving down I-5 in less than two weeks from the Bay Area. I'm wondering if anyone has any information on how bad the delays are in the Button Willow area due to the road work. I understand that I-5 closes down to one lane, and I'm hoping the delays aren't too crazy. Any recent experience anyone?

We went in April, the week after Easter.

I should clarify that we left from Concord right at 2 pm, and were down around buttonwillow around 5 something, on a Monday. It really wasn't that bad, there was slowdown at the initial merge to like 20 mph but then it was about 45 mph for a bit, then picked up to about 60 at the most. It was only about 8 minutes of this, total.

I will be driving I5 this weekend and next weekend:scared1:, at least the second is for a DL trip:yay:. I will try to make note of any delays and report back. PM this Sunday just in case I forget.

No offense, I have never seen it 60, most 80.

I am driving I-5 south tomorrow from Nor Cal to San Diego tomorrow and back down again next Tuesday for a DL trip...I will keep an eye out and post if there are any adverse conditions worth even posting about!

bumping this thread, wonder if others can report back on summer drive times.

I'll be down in the Los Angeles/Anaheim area next month and I've read about a closure of 10 miles of I 405 that is going to have a huge impact on traffic in the Los Angeles area. But I'm not sure what effect it will have on Disneyland traffic. I just don't know that area well enough. The shutdown is supposed to occur July 15th through July 18th.

My parents just drove down through there Monday to visit my sister. I asked and they said no problems, maybe slowed to about 60 at one point with some road construction around, but nothing worth complaining about.

What about construction in the Lebec area? How are the delays through that area? We're going to be driving down to San Diego through the LA area next week and then back from the Bay Area.

Even here in the bay area they are calling the 405 closuer Carmageden :scared1: But it shouldn't have any effect on Anaheim

I drove down on 6/11 and came back 6/17. We left from San Jose at about 12:30 and were at the GCH by 7. We did slow to about 20 mph for a 3 mile stretch and it was gridlocked as the lane merged down to only one lane. I'd say it tacked an extra 20 mins or so to the trip (so still much faster than the other options) There were two different stretches where it went down to one lane.

Coming back it was one longer stretch that was closed and it took us about 35 mins to go 5 miles. It still was better than going 1 or 99.

Honestly the traffic in/through LA is more of a pain in the rear than the construction on 5.

HTH :)

We are back! I agree with Sydnie...the traffic on I5 through L.A. was worse than the lane closures near Buttonwillow. I don't think the lane closures delayed us more than 15 minutes driving south on Monday. Driving North on Sunday the closures caused zero slow down. The traffic going South in L.A. at three o'clock Monday was ugly....probably a 45 delay. Sunday morning through L.A. was a breeze.

So do you think it is better to avoid the LA area (other than getting to the airport), or will it be okay on a Sunday?
