We will be pulling a 26 ft trailer to the fort. We are planing on traveling on i10 part of our trip. From the fort to Houston. I was just told that part of the road is pretty ruff and it was recommend that we avoid that route.
Has anyone traveled that part of I 10?
Are the roads that bad?

We go I-10 to FL every time. Although it has been about a year and a half since we went we have never found them rough to the point of wanting to avoid them. Take the Hammond exit ( I-12) from Baton Rouge and you can avoid New Orleans.

I believe you will be just fine.

You're welcome. One more thing, just as you get in to Baton Rouge I-10 narrows very briefly to a two lane. Don't worry it doesn't last long. 10 to Lake City, FL then 75 on in to 4 is a nice drive. Be prepared for a couple of toll booths as you get close to Orlando. I am sure you can post the question of how to get around them and someone will be able to tell you.

Have fun on your trip.

I have family that lives in Houston!

From I 10 should they not take I 75 to 27 ( Toll road) to 429 then to 192 to Disney property ?

Doesn't 27 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) by pass the toll booths? not sure only went that way once about 4 years ago. I just always go 75 to 4. Please give info on a better way! I hate paying those tolls!:thumbsup2

There is a ruff area between Baton Rouge and Lafayette like a washboard when pulling a trailer, we have gone this way for many years, its getting better as they work on it. Just slow down a little it does not last too long..

Thanks again for the helpful information. We were considering changing our route but have decided to take I 10 to Houston (then on to Kerrville Tx to visit family). We will try to bypass New Orleans .

Thanks for the tips. It can get a little stressful with a TT in traffic. We are thinking of putting a loud horn on our truck like that of a semi :O

Look at your route again..I 75 joins I 4 in Tampa that right there adds 1 1/2 hours to your trip.

If you don't mind tolls you can take the sunshine turnpike to toll road 429. Then get off at western way this is on Disney property. Western way meets buena vista dr at Coronado springs

:) The slow down you will face coming my way is the Biloxi traffic on a Saturday afternoon, but mostly 1-10 west and then again through the 1-10 tunnel and bridge across Mobile Bay. Those areas just tend to bottleneck a bit. You really only have two choices across Mobile Bay....1-10 bridge and the ground causeway that runs parallel to it. There are some good restaurants along the causeway. Once past Mobile there may be a little slow down as you come to Pensacola but it is usually smoother sailing there.

Not sure of your travel date but be warned that traffic backs up in Mobile AL as you enter the tunnel. It gets pretty bad on Friday afternoons. Any other times it's okay.

My DH is so thankful for the tips. We are going to print out all the tips. We will be leaving the Fort on a Monday (mid May) and plan our first stop in Mobile ( we are thinking of staying around Spanish Fort (DH wants to tour the Alabama). We plan on leaving for Houston on Wed. We want to tour Houston space center. Thanks again.

We are from Louisiana. We use this route every time. So much easier than dealing with I-4 traffic. The toll on the turnpike is about nine bucks and the toll on 429 is only a couple of bucks. Well worth the money!

I-10 & Louisiana...to quote Alec Guinness "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy". I hate that road.

Love touring the Battleship Alabama and the USS Drum. This could easily use up half a day or more, depending on how much of battleship park you tour. I also recommend the route that brings you in on the Western Way, I have gone both routes and there is no need to deal with the headache of I-4 in my opinion.

I, too,am writing down some of these tips. I guess I have been lucky all the times ice been to WDW as I have never really encountered any heavy I-4 traffic.

As many times as I've driven past the battleship I've never taken the tour. I think I'll do it next time I go. I bet it's really interesting.

We go the Florida Sunpass so we just breeze through the toll booths.
