I have been really lucky this year. I went to WDW in September 2002, January 2003, and I just returned last Sunday. So,why am I so excited? Why can’t I stop thinking about where I’m staying, what I’ll be eating, what great rides I’ll enjoy? Why was I so upset that Rock n Rollercoaster was going down for rehab the day after I get there? Why am I giddy with excitement? Well, it’s WDW, of course. This is the third trip without our children, Sarah (22) and Kimmi (20). I really enjoy taking them, but it is also so much fun to be “just us”.

The first time we went alone, it was just after 9/11. We had airline tickets for 9/14, and, needless to say, were unable to use them. The airline refunded our money, and we decided to drive all the way from Colorado. The next September, we also went alone. Days before we left, my husband, Stephen, wrecked his bicycle after he hit a piece of lumber laying in an intersection. He was pretty bruised and scraped up. He limped a lot during that trip. This year, nothing had happened. I even commented to my family at dinner the night before we left how it was so great that we were going without a tragedy happening. I was forced to eat my words at 9:00 that night. Kimmi had been babysitting her boss’s kids, and was returning from taking them to meet their mom. Her car was hit, broadside, in an intersection. A 16 year old boy ran a red light, and totaled Kimmi’s car. Miraculously, neither her, her passenger or the 16 year old boy were seriously hurt, just bruised and shaken up a bit. I had taken my car to the dealership in Boulder earlier that day to have it serviced and the airbag fixed while I was gone. We do not have another car. My husband rides his bicycle or motorcycle year round. I called a friend of mine from church who owns an RV dealership to see if he had a car for her to drive until my car was done. Knowing this friend, I knew that if he could help, he would. And, he did. We got home from the wreck at about 10:00 and he was at our house with a new four-wheel drive of some kind for her to drive. We finally got to bed at midnight, and were leaving at 7:00 the next morning. I was feeling pretty guilty to be leaving Kimmi after such an event, but she assured me she was fine.

Day 1:

We were picked up by a friend at 7:00, Friday, September 5, 2003. I did not sleep a wink that night. I was so stressed about Kimmi and so excited about the trip. What a mixture of emotion. We arrived at the counter at 7:30, and checked in the Delta. We were at the gate by 7:45, our flight was at 9:20. We had to changed planes in Cincinnati, and arrived in Orlando, on time, at 5:00 p.m. We used Mears, and were at the Beach Club Villas by 6:00. Check-in went smoothly. I was offered a number of views, but what I really wanted to close to the laundry room. I got no “Welcome Home”, but the CM that checked me in was learning, so I didn’t complain. I checked my folder for my complimentary Pal Mickey coupon. It was there.

We were given room 461 in the Villas. It was a long way from the elevators, and pretty far from the laundry room, but it’s not worth complaining about. We actually had a great view of Epcot. Canada was directly out my window, and Spaceship Earth was just to the left. We were across the hall from the elevator for the quiet pool. All in all, I loved this room. By cutting through the quiet pool area, and going through the lobby of the villas, it was not that far to walk.

My goal tonight was to get to MGM to ride Rock n Rollercoaster as many times as I could. As I stated earlier, it was going down for rehab the next day, and would not be operating the rest of our vacation. We arrived at MGM at 7:00, not bad, just two hours since we landed, and I’m walking into MGM. We were able to ride it three times that night. It was 8:00 now, and we decided to go to Epcot to enjoy our favorite snacks, cherry Kaki Gori, and a chocolate/maple Beaver Tail. We walked from MGM and arrived at Epcot at about 8:30. We headed straight for Japan, so Stephen could have his favorite snack, Kaki Gori. But, he was to be denied his favorite flavor, cherry. They were out of cherry, and we were told they would not have more for two weeks. He had not understood by disappointment in RnR being closed, but he began to understand when he was so disappointed that cherry was gone. He decided to try tangerine, and thought it was pretty good. Next, over to Canada for a Beaver Tail. But, what’s this? The stand is closed? I can’t believe it. My vacation is not starting out good!!! I recovered quickly once realizing that, after all, I was in Colorado just that morning, and now I am at Epcot preparing to watch Illuminations. We grabbed a spot in Canada to watch, and were swept away by the magic.

Happy and tired, we walked slowly back to our room, via the Boardwalk. I know, I know, that is the long way around, but we just love that stroll.

We were in our room by 9:45. I unpacked while Stephen turned on ESPN. This is one of his favorite parts of vacation. We do not have cable, Stephen’s choice. He believes if he had cable, he’d spend too much time watching it, so ESPN is a real treat when vacationing.

In bed by 11:00. I was still worrying about Kimmi and feeling a little out of sorts because of the accident. You know how moms think. What if she’d been hurt? What if it’d happened while we were already gone? What if Tony hadn’t had a car for her to drive? I finally drifted to sleep dreaming of riding RnR and it ending in a car accident, weird, huh?

Tomorrow, will I be able to stop worrying? Will Stephen leave the room, or watch ESPN all day? Will lunch at Le Cellier be all I remembered? Tune in tomorrow for the next episode of, “I’m on Vacation, so what can go Wrong?”

you did alot for being there so late in the day........I love the walk from Epcot to the Dolphin....but my feet after the third day said.....TAKE THE BOAT......hahaha......what a gorgeous night you had......I know hwo it is to be a mom.......hubby and I worry about the kids when we are in disney too......and they are all married ......and we have grandkids....hope your daughter and all are fine

It's too bad your DD, Kimmi, was in an accident but at least she was not hurt. And it's good that you were still home when it happened so you could make sure she was all right before you left. It sounds like you had a great first day in the "World" though. Can't wait to read more!:sunny:

i'm glad that no one was hurt in that accident!!!

now i'm wondering...how many kaki gori's will be devoured while you're there...and how many times will you be kicked out of the MK for talking too long?! ;)

Glad to hear that your letting the magic work on you. You deserve a great vacation and can't wait to read the next installment.

Hey there fellow Coloradan, its nice to know that we aren't the only people in Colorado that love WDW. We usually get the "You aren't going there again, are you" from the locals. Seems like the further east you live the more of "us" there are. Thank God your daugher was allright and it didn't happen after you had left. There was an angel looking after her and kept her safe. It doesn't matter how old our kids are, we never stop worrying about them and then the grandkids come along. Try to let go of the accident and enjoy your trip. 99% of the things I worry about never happen and the 1% that do happen turn out to be for the best. Winter's coming to Colorado real soon so soak up some warmth and sunshine. What a beautiful place to come home to, right!

Thanks for the trip report- so far. I'll be reading the rest of the "installments" after this one. :)

I'm glad you were home when she had the accident and that she wasn't hurt! :)

Also glad you were able to ride RnR before it went down for rehab. How long will it be down for rehab? Just curious.

Also curious about the coupon for Pal Mickey- please elaborate on that! That's the first I've heard about a coupon for it...

BibbidyBobbidyBoo: RnR opened back up the 15th. The coupon for Pal Mickey was through Disney Vacation Club. It was in our check in folder. I don't think it's offered anywhere else.

franw: It's nice to see other Coloradans her on the Dis. I only know of a few others. I tried to soak up as much sun as I could. The morning after I came, my furnace came on. Yes, it is beautiful here, but I'd give anything to live further south. I am not a cold weather person. And I don't ski. I know, we're for someone who lives in Colorado. I have been freezing since I came home.
