Hysterectomy

My mother went into hospital today, she has a hysterectomy tomorrow at 9am. Has anyone here had one and if so what can we expect, and how long will the recovery take. I am very worried and will probably be panaking at work tomorrow

My mum had one about 10 years ago, she was very groggy and in pain for a few days. When she came home she was meant to rest but after a few days she kept getting up to do stuff and so her stitches kept bursting It's really important tht your mum takes it easy afterwards, hope she feels better soon.

She has been told that she has to stay in hospital for a week, but when she gets back she can't lift anything or do any hoovering or ironing just to be careful. I am at work monday, tuesday and the weekend so hopefully will be off when she needs to come home and my sister is coming down so she will not be alone at the weekend, when I am at work again.

They normal say don't do any ironing hoovering , driving for six weeks after you leave hospital. The nurses will be able to tell you about all this , but then it will depend what way they will do it.
When leaving hospital the first week at home she will need to have someone with her.

My mom had one ages ago. I'm sure everything will go well. The first couple of weeks your mom will have to take it easy and have people do most things for her. Recovery really depends on the person. My mom isn't so great at sitting still so by the third week she was driving (short drives to the shops) and a week after that was back to hoovering etc! She's a nutter

My Mum also had a hysterectomy a few years ago. Like previous posters have said, she was told to take it easy for about six weeks afterwards. She lived on her own so I went to stay with her for a couple of weeks, to help her out, but within a week or so she was able to do little things like make a meal and a cup of coffee.

It is important that your Mum rests as much as possible in the first couple of weeks so she can heal properly.

I had this operation over 20 years ago but I don't think that anything's changed regarding recovery. I was off work for three months - that is normal. The thing about doing things too early, like driving, hoovering, carrying, stretching to get that pan off the shelf, etc. is that the stitching in the muscles can come undone, which results in another operation to stitch them back up. Ugh! IMHO it's just not worth it.

The main reason why she wont be able to drive will be her inability to perform an emergency stop. When she is safely able to slam her foot down on the brake she can drive, this normally takes several weeks.

Spoke to her today, she says there is no pain and was able to get out of bed. They are saying that she may come home sooner than we where told which would be good, partly as she says the food is horrible. So I am going to smuggle some nice fruit and some dried prunes that she likes. So hopefully she will be home by sunday.

I had a hysterectomy in August. I found the "emotional" healing harder than the physical healing. (I am only 37)

I think they have come a long way. I had a laporoscopic hysterectomy. I felt good after 1 day and great by the end of the week. I was tired, but I was not in any pain.

I think it makes a huge difference if you have to have abdominal surgery vs a laporoscopic surgery.

Went in today with a food bag, some dried fruit some fresh fruit, and some nice ham and a packed salad. I tried the food she was brought in for her supper it was totally uneatable! It smelled really bad. As for my mother when we went in she was told that she would be in for a week,now she probably be home tomorrow. She was laughing at me over some of the comments that her specialist made, he asked if there was any history of deaths of cancer in her family, as I have been doing the family tree for the last couple of years I have most of the death certificates of her family going back to 1837 so told him there had been no recorded incidents going back 170 years. Oh they wanted to know if she had had any surgury, the only piece of surgury she had was appendix removal when she was 3!

So glad everything went OK Paula. Totally agree about hospital food - whenever I have been in hospital, it has been inedible

She got told that as a precaution she has to have 5 weeks of radiotherapy. She is going to get hospital transport as my work pattern will not allow it and I can't afford to lose 5 weeks wages. This years christmas is here instead of at my sisters.
