Hypoactive thyroid anyone?

I made an appointment and it will be on tuesday. After reading this and seeing my self in your posts, I thought it was time to find out what is wrong with me. I know that it is not normal to be feeling this tired everyday of my life. I am only 30, and I don't like feeling like I'm old. The tiredness is just so unbareable .
If this isn't what is wrong, then I hope we are able to find out why I am this tired. I also have been having other symptoms that noone has mentioned. I get dizzy spells, and I feel like I can't think clearly. I just hope I find an answer.

Levoxyl is commonly prescribed instead of Synthroid. It is not a generic but most people think it is. Levoxyl is manufactured by ONE company. If, however, your doctor checks generic on your prescription form you will get a vial containing "levothyroxine" and it will have a manufacturers name on it. The next month it will still say "levothyroxine" on it but it may have another manufacturer on it. Yup- it is Levothyroxine. I've only been taking it for two months when I had been on Synthroid for the previous 3 1/2 years. I'll have to keep an eye out for the change in manufacturer (if any)- I actually have to get it refilled on Friday so I'll let you know what happens.

It was because of my silly insurance that it switched. I figured I'd give it a try- actually now I think about it, I think I was paying $25 and now I'm paying $10.

Again, I've been on the 'alert' for changes but so far, so good- things have been as they have been- no symptoms popping up.

Thanks for the heads up on change in manufacturer. I'll let you know what I get!

Remember you have to be your own advocate- if you don't like what your Dr tells you- find a new one- you have a right to feel better!

And yes- one of the symptoms is like 'you can't think clearly'- 'You find it difficult to concentrate, your memory is not as good as it should be, you feel like your thinking is "slow" ' (from the www.thyroid.about.com site).

I developed hypothryroidism after my first child was born. I was so tired, fatigued, hair falling out , etc... I thought the tired part was having a newborn to take care of. WRONG!

When they tested my TSH it was 121. It's supposed to be less than 5. I started Synthroid and it tooked several months to find the optimal dosage.

At present, I take the generic levothyroxine along with Cytomel which which helps with T-4. Since my hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto's Autoimmune Disease, I'll have to take synthetic thyroid hormones for the rest of my life. However, it's very manageable with meds.

I also have hypothyroid due to Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed when my son was around 8 months old. I am still very tired a lot of the time even on the medication, and I am still cold a good bit too. I have always been cold natured though.

Hi,

Another Hashimoto low thryoid person here. Diagnosed 5 months ago. STill working on getting dosage of Synthroid right. My thryoid has completely quit on me.

I was about to post a new thread, and did a search and found this one...hopefully you gals will still read this!

I found out this week that my TSH is "a little low", I forgot to ask the exact number. I am seeing an endocrinologist on the 25th of this month to find out what the next step is.

My question is, do you think the endo. will just automatically put me on the Synthroid (or whatever), or do you think she'll want to do more testing first? Is more comprehensive testing necessary? The thing is that I am breastfeeding my 7 month old, and I don't want to stop. So any tests she may want to do have to allow me to continue. I'm hoping she'll just be able to prescribe the pill...

Oh and the reason my primary Dr. had my TSH tested in the first place was because I've been having heart palpitations. I might have more that just that symptom though...memory loss, difficulty concentrating, fatigue... I attribute these things to having 3 kids 5 and under though, and not getting enough sleep for the past 5 years!! LOL

If your TSH is truly "low" then you do not have an underactive thyroid but an overactive one. High TSH = hypothyroid and low TSH = hyperthyroid. You will not be put on Synthroid for this. They do the reverse and try to find ways to stop your thyroid from working so much. There are several medications for this as well as permanent destruction of the gland.

Ooooooooooooooh, ok, it all makes sense now (I was a bit confused)! Now I need to go read up on HypERthyroid. Thanks a bunch. (And I hope they don't have to destroy the gland, that doesn't sound good! )

Wow! There are a bunch of us! count me in on this group.

I was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago. Could barely get up off the couch. thought I was tired, like everyone else here, due to kids, work, house, etc.

Been on the same dose for the whole time. Just checked my levels 1 week ago, and I am in the "range" I need to be.

Unfortunately, I have low iron also and the N.P. told me I could take iron with my thyroid pills. WRONG! It does something with the absorption rate.

BTW, I did not know that about the calcium interfering either!

I always thought I had this because I have so many of the symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, chills, hair loss etc., but the doctor always says my blood test is OK. When I reply that I have read the blood test could show OK and you could still have it, and isn't there some other test, the doctors ignore me.

P.S. Someone else mentioned dizzy spells, and the doctor just sends me to an ear therapist for vertigo tr=eatments for that and insists it isn't any other cause. I cannot change doctors because that is all we have available on our health plan.

I know exactly what you mean. Even in the doc's office, they look at me like I'm crazy.
As a child my "normal" temp was always lower - fortunately my mother did recognize this. I was diagnoised with hypothyroidism at 17 - 1 little pill does it.
