of course right now im worried about all the people in these hurricans paths.
we leave for Disney on Aug 31, I am naturally fearful of flying, so much I may have to take something to even walk into the airport. how common are hurricans in and around florida, how soon do you know they are coming? I feel stupid but this is making me rethink our trip.

yes I am a huge baby. can anyone talk me down. DH thinks im nuts

You don't mention where you're from, but hurricanes are better than what you get in other parts of the country, such as tornadoes. They do a marvelous job of predicting hurricanes and tracking their path. Usually no huge surprises other than a slight shift in direction.

I remember a year or so ago that Disney had to stow trash cans and the like because of bad weather related to a hurricane. It was the first time anybody could ever remember them doing that.

You'll be fine. And as for the airplanes, they just fly around weather. The worst that can happen is you'll be stuck in some airport for a few hours. Not fun, but not very dangerous.

Enjoy your trip.

Hurricanes are no problem. It's the tornadoes that get me! You will know in plenty of time if there is a hurricane approaching. They forecast Charlie several days ago and indicated that it would be heading into the Gulf so that gave everyone plenty of notice. Just keep an eye on the news or www.weather.com to get forecasts for Orlando. You can do extended forecasts at weather.com to help you plan. I don't think I have heard anything about a storm starting with a "D" name so I guess there aren't anymore churning up right now. Just keep an eye out and don't worry. I think Orlando is far enough inland to only get rain and wind.

By August 31 there might not even be a hint of a hurricane...and if there is it might be in some other location...we've spent many vacations during hurricane season in Orlando and haven't ever had to deal with any...sniff..sorta disappointing, really...think about the stories you could tell your grandchildren someday!

lol...really, the chances of you ever getting to be in a hurricane in central Florida are pretty small...hurricanes cause the most problems on the coast(s) and like a previous poster said, the airlines fly around them.

Actually, the hurricanes that are going through right now are probably only causing clouds and perhaps some rain in central Florida. Anyone living near Disney? What's the weather like?

Hurricane season runs through October. With September being the worse month (that's the reason for value season). Nothing you can do about it, it's the luck of the draw. Been during a few and flew out of DC a day early last September to avoid Isabel when it hit the coast. You can only play it by ear and make the best decision possible for you and your family. Just think, we are only on B and C, so we have a long way to go. We usually make it about mid-way through the alphabet before it's over. (Remember Isabel mid-September last year, making it the 9th hurricane by the time our trip rolled around). This is why we try to go as late in october as possible. Good Luck to all!

BTW: NOAA does a great job at tracking the storms. I stayed glued to weather postings as my fall trips approach.
