My favorite time of year to cruise is during the heart of hurricane season, Sept-Nov. The rates are generally lower, the weather is still warm, and the days are still long. You won't actually get caught in a hurricane on a cruise ship unless the captain is a complete moron. They are able to chart weather systems and keep apprised of where they are, where they are going, and how fast they are moving, and re-route the ship in plenty of time. I've been on cruises which have called at alternate ports due to storms, and haven't had any problems with rough seas. You just have to be aware that this could happen, but I don't think it's a big deal. Ships can miss port calls for other reasons as well. In any case, it's very unlikely. I'd say maybe two cruises per year for a given ship are diverted during hurricane season.
