We are looking at a cruise for either late July or early August. Anyone out there with any past experience or advice on hurricane season. I read that hurricane season officially begins in June, with the greatest chance of one in August, Sept. or October.
Would we be reasonably safe early Aug? or should we move to late July?

Thanks for your thoughts.

You know honestly it does not matter. Today started hurricane season here and they can occur anytime until December. True, last year our peak of activity was Sept/Oct but don't let someone fool you into thinking either of those dates are any better. The cruise ships do divert /change itinerary due to weather. They aren't going to haul you into danger. My best advice is get the travel insurance.

Don't let 'hurricane season' fool you. A hurricane can occur in any month of the year and have occured in all but one month in the recorded history of hurricanes. Although the so called seaon runs from June 1 to November 30, the most active time is late Aug through September. Even then if a hurricane is in the offering the ship can go around it while if you are on land you are pretty well stuck. So the biggest problem you will have is if a hurricane closes down the airlines and you cannot get to the port or the port is damaged and the ship can't get in or out of the port and has to cancel, shorten or extend your cruise.

We've sailed 5 times during September, which is "high time" for hurricanes. We had a cruise really messed up only in 2004 with Jeane. One other year, the ship sailed to ports other than those scheduled in order to avoid hurricane territory. Since this is "off season" and the cheapest time to sail, it does have advantages.

I wouldn't worry about "hurricane season." I'd book it again in a heartbeat if my personal schedule allowed.
