Hurricane Season

I have booked a cruise on the Disney Fantasy for this coming August (end of the month). Im a little concerned about it being Hurricane Season. I look at what happened with the Fantasy during hurricane Sandy, and its a bit alarming. Do they normally sail through the storm or avoid it?
Has anyone sailed through a storm? Should I be at all concerned?

They will avoid a storm as much as possible, so I would not be concerned. What happened with Sandy was definitely rare. For an example we sailed in August of 2014 when Hurricane Cristobal was in the ocean. Captain Marco made the decision instead of sailing to the east of the Bahamas (which they usually do) to go down the western side to avoid the storm however that would not get us to St Maarten in time. Instead we went to San Juan as our first port, then on to St Thomas as planned. We never felt any effects of the storm and had a great cruise. We are even sailing in August again this year and while I know things can happen, I'm not concerned about safety. I'm sure you will have a magical cruise!

They try to avoid it but sometimes things like Sandy happen. I wouldn't be too concerned but its the risk you take booking during hurricane season. We are going in Sept we bought travel insurance, I'm not too worried about it.

Hurricane Sandy was indeed a rarity and the reports are blown out of proportion. Many people were indeed scared. However the vessel, passengers, and CM's were never in any real danger.

Storms occur year around and non Hurricane storms can be just as fierce as hurricanes. The Maser will do the most possible to avoid the weather, including route changes, port of call changes or rotation changes.

Enjoy whatever cruise you decide on, if your flying, arrive a day or 2 early.

No master of a ship is going to put what amounts to his/her livilihood on the line, not counting the guests and a billion dollar ship. Well with 1 exception and hes paying the price. You'll hear a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking, oh they should have done this and should have done that but the fact remains that the master will do everything they can to make a trip enjoyable and safe. We typically sail in October on the downhill swing. Worst case scenario on a cruise, an eastern becomes a western or CC may come first with Nassau last or any other combination.

I wouldn't worry and enjoy my cruise as it comes.

We have sailed several times (actually most of our sailings) during hurricane season with no issues. That being said, we also make sure we have trip insurance for those crusies.
As you know, hurricane season starts June 1st and goes until November 30th. The most intense storms I have been thru as a resident of Orlando happened in September. Well, except for 2004 when they started in late August with Charley and then continued with several more in a month time. That was sort of a fluke though.
We love going in September because the weather is typically wonderful.

A captain and crew are NOT going to sail you into danger and in fact will change the route and go towards safety. Going to Mexico instead St. Thomas might be a bummer, but you would still have fun.
