Hurricane Season Again

We have flood insurance--so that was our first preparation. (purchased it post-Katrina).

We will be away for the summer--so not quite sure what we will do preparations wise.

We've been hitting our stash of water from last summer and I will replenish that.

I will also have a garage sale to get rid of excess that we dont' need (weird way to prepare--but less clutter and stuff is a good thing).

I will take the hurricane prep list and review what we have and then go pick up the rest.

Busy season isn't until Aug/Sept which is when we will be back. So all of our equipment should be good while we are gone.

Good luck to everyone this summer/fall. We thought we'd have our roof repaired and ready to go, however turns out we need a whole new roof (which is what I thought from the day Wilma blew through)...Our situation is minor compared to you Katrina survivors up there, but we hope to have the roof replaced by peak hurricane season.

Yesterday I had quite a scare. A technical adjuster came out from our insurance company, he went up on the roof, he was up there a good 1/2 hr or so, it was a windy day too...

WELL I heard a thud, I ran outside and the guy was laying in my drive way next to his ladder!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My heart stopped, he WAS SOOO LUCKY!! He fell off his ladder!! He ended up with a mild concusion and twisted ankle, but he could have died!! He said it was the first time in 15 yrs something like that happened. I was ready to call 911, but he got up ok...well he eventually starts telling me about the roof, do you think I can remember any of what he told me, I was so stunned!! and still have visions in my head of him laying in my driveway!!

UGH!! My roofer told me they NEVER put their ladders on concrete or asphalt, always on the grass (of course if there is grass), but just keep that in mind, what a horrible experience!!

I for one really had no idea a hurricane could cause soooo much damage. Naivety? I guess so. DVCSadie-and any others- we have a place in central alabama- if you ever need somewhere to stay. Ivan was the worst thing we had ever seen. Katrina didn't affect us much. I LOVE Biloxi, it began, of course, because of the casinos, we went about once a month pre-katrina, the Grand Biloxi, was our second home, but my love for Biloxi extended far beyond the casinos, it was (and will be again) a very charming southern city, beautiful in its history. I remember watching Jim Cantore(my fav.) on the weather channel the night before Katrina hit, he was in front of Treasure Bay Casino, he said in a few hours that particular casino wouldn't be there as we could see it then. I didn't believe, really, that it could destroy "my town". I stayed up as late as I could, then upon awakening the next morning, my first concern was my beloved Biloxi (its where we wanted to retire someday). Upon hearing of the devastation, I was horrified. It was so much more than I thought possible. I have always loved storms, I love thunder, and lightening, have no real use for tornado warnings, but other than that, I , for some reason, always loved bad weather. (from bama, not much goes on around here, can ya tell? ) Katrina changed so much. We were in Biloxi about5 months after Katrina, and it was still sooooo terrible, the devastation is unimaginable, you have to see it in person to really get any kind of clear picture about it. I am sooo sorry you and others lost so much. Hurricane season now scares the crap out of me, and I have heard that this year is going to be as bad as last year, which is unimaginable. Wishing you all the best, and no more hard times, let alone complete losses of things you love. At least you have your life. It all just breaks my heart, I have no words of condolence, no ways to make it better. Just wanted you to know some of us DO care!!

Well this will be our first season off the coast. We're both from south florida, target range for all the atlantic hurricanes. But I never saw the damage that 2004 caused to central florida.
I just know that it's what you get for living on the coast, and I enjoy preparing for hurricane season. The only thing that scares me is my mom living in a mobile home. It got beat up pretty good in wilma last season, that when she gets her tax return I want her to move her butt out and into a good apartment complex with nice strong walls. And away from south florida.

magicmirror, thanks for loving Biloxi and the coast as much as us. The next time you come down to visit call us if you'd like and would like to have a dis meet. Actually this offer goes out to anyone visiting the coast.

My dh and I are looking at house tomorrow afternoon to see if we would be happy living there while we redo the house that was totaled by Katrina. We figure that it will take a year to have everything complete but won't start rebuilding until after this November.

I'm glad this thread is here. It reminds me that it's about that time of year to stock up on things like batteries, water, canned goods etc. We don't get the storm surge like the coast but we still get enough wind damage to cause major problems.

Andrew (for us in BR), IMO was worse than Katrina. I know that is hard to believe, but Katrina at least blew through. Now we did have alot of trees down and our power was out for a week with Katrina, but Andrew just sat on top of us for several hours. If I remember correctly, with Andrew our power was out for 3 weeks.

My thoughts remain with all of you along the coast.

Yecats, if you're looking in Baton Rouge, the housing situation seems to have leveled out now. And there isn't that much price gouging with the housing like there was in the months after Katrina.

Desiree, I just heard them say that on the news this past weekend that housing was finally going down in that area and have recently began looking into possible condo's there. I am still up in the air about what I want to do with my life. I am leaning toward staying in the Mandeville area as my immediate family is all around here but truthfully I am waiting to see what is going to happen this hurricane season. I hope that the prices in this area begin to go down but I don't think they will. Life is going on but I am still running around in circles and will have to stop soon. God Bless all on any coast this season to have strength to keep on going.

Awww, thanks magicmirror. We won't start rebuilding until November just due to having difficulty finding sub contractors right now.
