Hurricane Rita DISers Update?

I have more pics of the daybreak head 'em out. They are on DH's box which is at his work. I'll have to try and post them tomorrow, if y'all want to see them. I think you'll get a kick out of seeing what we took. :rotfl:

Hi Deena :wave2:

BTP, I loved all the pics you took... though I wish you didn't have to take them in the first place (kwim) I feel so bad that you had to go through all that with such a sick little one!

Hey - bring James Stewart up to visit me and I'll take him to Jimmy's hometown (1.5 hours from me) and we'll visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and I'll show him Jimmy's Dad's hardware store and the front window that his Dad placed Jimmy's Oscar in for years and years.

And then we'll go looking for Harvey! ;)

Seriously, I am so glad everyone from the DIS is ok.

Thanks, Elaine for the update on Rajah.

I wondered whether anyone was traveling on the back roads. A year ago we had flooding in PA from the hurricanes and the PA Turnpike has a washout and rockfall close it down - DH was coming home from NJ. He grabbed his handy road atlas and just starting driving on back roads. The roads would get washed out and he'd find an alternate route. He was on the road for about 15 hours and made it home safely.

Hey everyone! Thanks for asking about me. :) Sorry I couldn't check in again after my last update. We moved from the hotel to my mom's friend's mom's house for a couple of days and barely had dialup there, then drove home Tues (no trouble) and haven't hooked my computer back up yet. I slept pretty much all day yesterday.

We did take back roads at some point, but in a lot of areas they weren't *allowing* you to be on the back roads. Ugh.

I'm planning to do a trip report type thing on this with what I've learned, but short of it:
ALWAYS travel with a map.
If you're going very far, especially in this kind of situation, take at least one gallon of water per person and a few cans of food that you can eat out of the can.
Never pass up the opportunity to top off in this situation.
Once you've gone about 20 hours on the road, make sure you have munchies and eat something, even if it's just a few crackers or a cereal bar, to keep your energy up until you *can* stop.
If you're traveling in groups, walkie talkies are MUCH more reliable than phones.
Don't forget the pets! Even though you put water down for them, make sure they're drinking! Ours didn't, and we had to force water down them with a straw.
We put a harness and leash on every cat for safety sake -- and we needed them several times. Not to *stop* the cat from running away, but usually to get the cat back *out* of the carrier when it was time for a drink or we arrived.

BTP -- good work on the pics. I took my camera with intentions of getting some, but by the time the sun came back up, I was tired enough all I could do was focus on driving.
