Hurricane Frances

We've got some wind here in Plantation, but it's not that bad. Some tree branches are down, and the road is a mess with leaves. Lucky for me, we still have power and internet. Cable went out, but I can get the local channels using a regular antenna. The hurricane coverage gets old after a while. The hard part is waiting for it to be over, since the storm slowed down.
For those in Orlando, go rent some movies if you can, and plan an all day activity, like organizing your home, because you're going to be stuck inside all day.

Crikey, you Floridians sure know how to take an awe-inspiring destructive force and make it sound boring as watching paint dry! :teeth:

We ar hunkered down here, waiting for the worst to come some time tomorrow morning. I baked a turkey breast for dinner tonight, so we will have plenty for sandwiches tomorrow when the power (inevitably) goes out. Now I am boiling down the bones for some good hearty soup, and baking an apple pie and chocolate chip cookies.

My 10yr DS thinks this is fun! Twice in less than three weeks!

Well - I am going to go finish doing the last of my washing (want to make sure everything is clean!) and get the pie out of the oven. :sunny:

I will post after the storm is over, hopefully to tell you all is well!:wave2:

Any new reports in the Orlando area?

My power stayed on thru the night. Publix is open, and things are starting to come back.

cc1954,
I SOOO want to be at your house right now with that beautiful Thanksgiving dinner planned ;) Turkey, apple pie, and choc chip cookies!!! It can't get any better than that ;)

We are thinking of you and I hope you are doing well!

It's been windy and rainy all day. I think Ft. Myers is getting brushed by Frances.

cc1954,

I live in Houston, and we get our share of storms, too. I do like you and start cooking foods that will keep a few days, such as turkey, a ham, chicken, etc. something that can be eaten cold. I thought I was the only one with that idea. When you've lived several days without electricity you learn how to prepare for the next one. I also, if time permits, catch up on laundry. You'll be glad of clean clothes! That's assuming you stay put and don't evacuate. Once we had to leave, and we took our kittys with us. I realize shelters don't allow animals, but we couldn't just leave them behind! We had cages for them, litter box, food, etc. We spent one night at a hotel and just sneaked the cats in. Either that or leave them in the van--either way was better than just leaving them.

First let me preface my question with a comment.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our fellow Dis-ers who are in the Florida area. Here in the mid-west we occasionally have tornadoes, sure we gets TONS of snow, but I cannot even imagine the huge area of destruction and devestation being experienced by all of you Floridians. We will continue to pray that you all come thru alright!

My question is: Why does the WDW website and DCL site for the past few weeks always have a box that comes up, with up-to-date information on the parks, opening, closing info and such? I logged on a few moments ago and was relieved that it states that although WDW is closed today, it hopes to open tomorrow if it is safe and that THE PARKS HAVE WEATHERED THE HURICANE WELL (not a specific quote, but it gave me the reaasurance, as well as those traveling to WDW in the near future that our beloved site is ok).

Why can't Universal post similar up-dates and info so that their guests receive the same kind of info as Disney? If I had a vacation booked in the next week or so, I would want to know.

Yes I know they are busy dealing with the effects of the hurricane, but are they that much busier than Disney, that they cannot update their guests? Seems like it would ease some of the phone congestion and worry if they posted a brief note to let people know where they stand. Sure the curcumstances are ever changing.. but just something...anything!

i was just wondering.

I agree and wish Universal would do that also, as it is helpful to us who are trying to reschedule our trips for this week...:sunny:

Universal is open for normal operating hours tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 6.

The Orlando airport will re-open tomorrow at noon. I hope this helps with your vacation plans.

Bev

I've always been frustrated with Universal's lack of news and updates...especially when it comes to the weather...my parents and I were watching the news for like an hour just to see what the hours for Universal would be after Charley. :o A simple notice on the website would have saved a lot of time, indeed.

I'm sorry everyone! It's all my fault...it seems whenever I've planning a couple day trip to Universal a Hurricane comes and messes up my plans. :p :p I think I've jinxed y'all!

Down here in Venice, FL we're faring quite well....lots of rain, and strong gusty winds, but severe weather remained pretty much to our north, fortunately and unfortunately. I'm just ready for it to go away.

Praying Ivan doesn't hit us as well...

Hoping all other Floridians are doing okay.

Hey Clare... Happy early Birthday... I ditto what you have said on the weather here in SW FL (Lee County), we have been spared much futher major damage) I too am watching IVAN. I cannot take much more of this. By the way..it isn't your fault, it is mine for these storms... instead of trying to go to Universal, I have been trying to go to WDW :jester: I had ressie for this weekend & canceled them on last Sunday...rebooked for next week  I think I will just cancel outright & then we will not get Ivan ::yes:: ::yes:: Someone is telling me not to go to WDW, must be Cat in the Hat & the Flintstones :jester: If I change my plans to Universal we should all be spared Ivan :umbrella: :umbrella:

Ok, a Mikey Fan and FLy Fly - now we know who to blame!;)

We weathered this storm even better than Charley - and Webmaster Barry, I think you are right - we just got brushed by the winds - did you get any flooding where you are at? I would hate to see the van by the river get washed away:(

We now look toward Ivan!

I have a friend in Melbourne who I have not been able to reach by land line or cell phone - hope they get the phones working soon:rolleyes:

For those who may not get as much coverage in other areas as we get locally - it looks like Orlando (and especially around Kissimmee) got hit kind of hard - both times! I hope we hear from DM and Spideyhulk soon:confused:

My thoughts and prayers are with all my fellow Floridians :wave2:

OH! OH!! And all this time you ahve been blaming me Sharon?????????????
So, it IS your fault!

Has anyone heard from Mr. Marauder? I bet he is sheltered up, scaring poor inncoent girls with his scarab. :)

V Hoffmann - I just caught up with reading all of the replies and saw your kind words and thoughts - and you are so right!:sunny:

I learned the first time around, and bought up some of those "I did not think of that!" supplies this time. And cooked up a storm! Imade and froze spaghetti sauce, and also Jambalaya. This way, if it defrots in my "powerless" freezer, I know I can heat it up on the gas grill side burner. We also bought an extra takn of propane!:hyper:

Right now, the biggest problems are resupply. We still have many "easterners" stuck on our side of the coast, as the gas supplies have not yet gotten here.:(

We have also not been able to restock lamp oil. None of the local outlets including Wal Mart etc normally keep that much in stock, so when all of their stock got wiped out with Charley, they did not have a chance to restock!

But I did find a cheap internet source that is sending it directly to my home - hope it makes it here before Ivan does!

I have never been through a hurricane, but over here on the coast in Georgia we got some nasty storms here today. If this was just a taste of Frances, I would have hated to get the full force! It is still storming really badly right now (that's why I'm up at 2:45 in the am) and the tv has been having tornado and flood warnings all day. I am hearing another tornado warning being issued right now till 3:15 am. The power has been in and out all day too.
Good luck to all of you that felt Frances's wrath. I hope everything is back to normal for you soon!

PS- I checked and DM hasn't been on since 9/4. Hope he's ok.:( DM, Come back soon!!!!!:wave2:

We weathered the storm pretty good here. Lots of downed trees and lots of people around us without power, but we never lost power. I am about 60 miles south of where Frances made landfall. So all in all we are pretty fortunate to have weathered the storm ok. Now the cleanup begins.

Good news! I talked to Dark Marauder today when he was riding MIB. He is fine and has electricity but no internet. I told him that I would let all of you know so you wouldn't worry. He'll be back just as soon as his internet is back up and running.

Thanks for letting us know!:D

Great news, phamton!

In case some of you did not catch it, Spideyhulk reported in on a thread "To all my fellow disers" that he is ok too!! :sunny:

May we hear many more of these good tidings in the next few days :sunny: and may Ivan go away without hitting land!
