As we are heading to Vero Beach over Labor Day weekend and Hurricane Frances seems headed there, what are our options if we wanted to cancel this late before arrival? Do they have a contingency for the points for this type of thing?Any information would be appreciated.

Considering what folks posted here about their experiences with Charley in Orlando, I'd say that chances are good that you will get your points back if Frances makes a direct hit on the VB area where flights, etc. are grounded.

Edited to say that DVC is not required to return any points...but has set a precedent of being very good to their members during situations like this in the past.

Frances is still a long way from Florida. I'd just keep an eye on it...and plan on going if at all possible. A lot of things can happen to a hurricane in a week.

If you cancel 1-30 days before check-in, your points go into a "holding account". All the points have to be used by the end of your Use Year (they can't be banked or borrowed). They can only be used for reservations that are 60 days or less from the arrival date.

You can use them for non-DVC options that are booked 60 days or less before arrival. However, the day you call for the reservation must be more than 60 days from the end of your Use Year.

As Katie explained, in the case of a hurricane actually hitting and/or disrupting your travel (cancelled flights, etc.) DVC will usually work with you to resolve the problem. If you want to cancel now because of the threat of a hurricane, you will probably have to abide by the regular holding account policy.

We have plans to drive over after work on Friday, also - checking out on Tuesday.

Pam is right. Just hold out as long as you can.

We had to cancel reservations at the last minute for Floyd - and MS was MORE than accomodating with my points - which expired in September.

I think you'll be fine!

Thanks to everyone for their help! Let's hope Frances just heads out to the middle Atlantic and disolves.
