So I'm seeing some weather people mentioning the idea that there could be a big hurricane forming soon and might move through the Florida peninsula late next week. I know they don't know for sure at this point, but it's at least something to consider. Anyone ever ridden a big hurricane out at Disney? I'd imagine it's one of the safer places to be. Power losses would be my biggest concern. Just starting to get a little worried about our trip....

Katrina passed through the peninsula, had no impact on central florida (yes I was there for this). It's too early to be worried about anything and florida is really long, hitting the peninsula is probably going ot be nowhere near central florida.

Just search some previous did hit central florida hurricane information. In short, disney is ready and does a lot of things to prep guests including entertain them as I think the last one to hit a long time ago, they opened all the parks for free until noonish while it was safe.. i think there has only been 1 where parks were closed more than the day it hit and that was mostly to clear trees.

to put it another way, if I even needed to evacuate or was concerned being at home, I would get a room at disney and head there.

I was there for Charley...direct hit. The vast majority of hurricanes miss Orlando.
I arrived about 6hrs before Charley did. Basically that day was the only day impacted. We never lost power. The parks shut down by 3. CMs did an incredible job keeping guests safe. Many people from Tampa drove over to avoid the storm! Sadly, WDW was tight in the path, changed from Tampa!
I never felt unsafe at WDW. Most of the parks opened the next day.

If it forms into anything it will stay well south of Florida. Check WeatherUnderground (under Severe Weather) for plots.

My dd is working there now....I'm not concerned. Way too early to even think about it.

The TV weather people seem to be more interested in making sure you stay tuned to their station than anything else. If you're concerned about a possible hurricane go to the no-hype source, the National Weather Service.

Weather forecasting, especially with regard to hurricanes, is such an inexact science that it's absolutely useless to even be thinking about what might happen more than a week from now.

IF a system forms, and even IF it's major, it might not even end up pointed at Orlando. Florida's big.

While it is way too early to be concerned since storms usually will change course a dozen times before they hit land (if they hit land), Disney World will be perfectly safe for you if you are there and a storm does it. We were there during Frances (actually driving into Florida while the roads going out where jammed with people escaping). Disney will shut down kiosks and shrink wrap trashcans and make sure all is fine with the "equipment". We saw that the day we arrived. However, once we got back to the resort, we were in a 24 hour shutdown. We were told to stay in our rooms and not venture out but we were given notice and the gift shop and food court was open so we grabbed a pizza already made and ready to go and headed to our room. Oh, I think we also picked up some beer J. For the next 24 hours, we had water, electric, and cable. The only suggestion I can give you is to take some sort of other entertainment if needed. The regular TV stations were playing the same old thing, "the water is now this high and the winds are now this strong" so that was boring. Disney did play tapes of their movies but there really wasn't a schedule so we just joined in when we could when totally bored. At absolutely no time did we feel unsafe at all.

Our local met's blog has been all over a major hurricane next week stating our weather in KY is dependent on what this thing does. The map a few days ago had it hitting more along Mississippi/Alabama but today's charts are more into south Florida. The timing looks to be before Columbus Day weekend though, maybe a Thursday/Friday time frame. I would remain in the be aware that something is out there frame of mind, but would not change any plans based on what is currently projected.

Curious, why on earth would someone worry about something that hasn't even formed yet? May want to wait till it even forms to start following it's tracking.
Otherwise, you can search back just a month of so to see the last round of posts on a hurricane in central FL
For the record, we are there the same weekend and it is the furthest thing from something I'd worry about.

It's too far out to know yet. The latest Euro model has it hitting southeast FL and the latest GFS has it hitting the east coast. Don't worry too much about it right now. Keep an eye on it, but don't stress yet.
As others said, Disney's a pretty good place to ride out a hurricane. It's built to withstand storms. They'll take care of guests.

Weather.com is showing 60-80% chance of rain Sept. 30th-Oct 4th. This time of year its typical to see 40% daily for afternoon showers. We're headed there starting Thursday for 10 days. Hope it doesn't rain too bad especially in the evenings as that often causes parades, fireworks, fantasmic etc. to be cancelled plus it makes for soggy shoes!

Don't worry! Orlando is in the middle of the state. Those on the coast will come to Orlando for safety (if the hurricane even happens). You might want to bring your rain gear either way.

Have been there for a hurricane and a couple of heavy tropical storms. Actually had fun during those trips. It was an adventure and the parks were fairly empty. This past June our last day was a tropical storm and it was a relief from the heat/humidity. Walked around WS most of the day and had a great time in the rain.
